Savage A22 Takedown 22 LR 18″ Semi-Auto Rifle

The 'new' A22 Takedown may be better than the standard A22, but, I had an A22-LR 3-4 years ago and got a 'Varmint' trigger-spring to reduce the pull to ca 2.5#. It still was stiff and awkward and had an irritating 'Clunk' when the trigger reset. The sound was exacerbated by the hollow stock. And the action is a weird design that precludes disassembly/adjustment. The accuracy was 'fair' but not outstanding compared to my Sav B22. The A22 didn't stay around long, even after I 'fixed it'. I traded it for an old Rem 1100 that needed work.
JMO - just try to find one at a range b4 you buy one. Yes, I'm prejudiced due to my experiences with one.

Hey Buck, these Savage A22's and A17's appear to be hit and miss. More often a hit than a miss from my experiences as a dealer.

I sold a sweet Savage A17 with a factory target barrel and a grey laminate stock. It would shoot ten rounds into a 1/4" hole at 50 yards. This was with CCI A17 Varmint Tip (2650 fps), 17 HMR rimfire ammo.

We had to request a few new trigger groups from Savage Canada Warranty Depot to switch them out. Once this was done, any trigger issues were resolved.

From our experiences though, they were more accurate than a Ruger 10/22, and without having to spend a pile of money to make it shoot, and have a better trigger.......:) For the record, I love Ruger 10/22 rifles!

Bought one a while back when someone had a sale on @ $199.99.
Shot it a few times, it was okay. Sold it at a local show for a lot more than I paid for it.
And now... YIKES!!

I formerly owned a savage A22, not a take down. It wasn't bad, but neither was it amazing.

Things I liked.
-It was large, ie size of a normal rifle, and felt good in the hands.
-The disassembly to clean the action is easy with the small back cover, there is a caveat thought)
-At the time the price was good, compared to 10/22 or GSG-16 which were my other considerations (think around/under $300)
-Large magazines available, for plinking
-My accuracy was fine. It wasn’t stellar and my Savage Mk ii will out shoot it.
-Accutrigger. It isn't an amazing trigger, but it is a cheap way to make a decent trigger.

Things I wasn't a fan of
-Not all ammo will cycle the action. Had some cheap ammo that likely didn’t have enough charge to cycle the blow back enough to fully cycle. Swapped to some better ammo and didn’t have an issue. That said the cheap stuff cycled from a 10/22.
-Mounting a scope make the "easy" disassembly a pain in the ass.
-The action is very dirty, also the ammo I shoot is CHEAP!!!
-At the time there was little/no after market.
-Was my first new semi (not bought second hand) and had to degrease/regrease the bolt to get it to cycle.

Conclusion of my experience.

It isn't "bad" it just isn't amazing either which seems like a common trait for savage. I don’t regret buying it as I had some fun, but I am unlikely to buy one again. I currently own a 10/22 again and am quite happy.

Having also owned 10/22 takedowns, the base A22 didn't match up to a 10/22 I find it hard to believe the take down will. The main things I liked about A22 over 10/22 have length of pull and price at the time.

I have the A22 takedown. I like it a lot. Not as accurate as the old MKII but it's a semi-auto and takedown.

I recently acquired a scope with rimfire parallax but didn't get to try it on
note that this rifle seems to need a break-in (couple hundred rounds)

the targets below were aimed at with a 1.5-4x20 LPVO with a 150y parallax

It appears the Federal Standard Velocity 40 grain LRN ammo shot like a house on fire.

I wonder if you were to try CCI Blazer 22 LR ammo, or another quality type 22 LR ammo, if that rifle had the potential of being an actual tack driver?.......:)

I see you now are selling this same rifle on the EE. Could you not get it to shoot better with quality ammo?

The best groups were shot with Federal Automatch.
This past Friday I noticed that the scope's reticle is rattling when rocking the magnification ring back and forth.
I am waiting for Hawke to give me a RMA to have the scope repaired or replaced.
I don't have another rimfire scope to re-test the ammo I have in hand.

...and yes, I could try quality ammo but that would cost me more than the rifle itself so I won't

Got mine last week. Rifle looks good, easy takedown and cleaning. Trigger is a little gritty, but I expect this to improve with use. Adjustability is good. Mounted a 3-9X40 scope, shoots decent grouping, but only @ 22 yards as I shoot indoors. I used Fed Champion bulk and Federal Automatch, 1 inch grouping with my tired hands. I will try subsonic rounds next time. My only negative observation: Trigger pack has a bit wobble against the stock. There is an aftermarket trigger pack. A shim might work to tighten the fit against the stock, or a good epoxy and slow but meticulous filing or a rotary tool to take off excess material until the upper assembly drops in tightly. Also, tried removing the barrel and reinstalling. Same grouping. Also tried removing the scope, and re-mounted it back. Grouping seems to hold up. I used this mount : razoredgegroup.com/products/ncstar-all-steel-1-med-high-ring-weaver-level-lock Cheap, but seems to hold up for now. Overall, decent performance without any mods, yet. Just need a more relaxed hands next time. Kudos to CSC for the service. From inquiries to ordering and delivery. Best pricing plus free delivery.
