Looking to buy a savage action only. Do any dealers sell them? Or what other options for actions that take savage pre fit barrels are there, I want to be able to swap barrels myself at home.

Bighorn origin, bighorn tl3, arc nucleus, arc mausingfield, arc Archimedes, ultimatum deadline(I think). Those take savage thread barrels. Skip the savage action if you have funds for a custom. All those listed take Remington 700 triggers and have a Remington 700 footprint except for the ultimatum, it needs some tweaking to fit most 700 stocks

REM 783 can be had for 4 or 5 hundred.

They take a savage prefit I think. They use a Savage nut to screw the barrel on,swapping will the same as a Savage.

I’m shooting 6.5 CM right now ,with the factory barrel.
Getting sub MOA with very little effort.

I’m might try an IBI prefit though, one day.. lol

Prefit barrels have become very popular and many factory actions are now supported. PM or email and happy to get you set up

The Savage planform is very popular but you don't need to stay there if you already have other options or of other options are easier to source.

I've brought in a couple of the Savage PTA actions (the red-trigger version) via IRunGuns in the past; that said, not seeing them there currently.

(Elwood Epps used to stock them, but I had an issue with them a few years back that will keep me from dealing with them ever again.)

(A few minutes later...) Actually, I'm starting to wonder if Savage has stopped selling the "action only" version - a quick google search for "savage 18637" (the model number of my last import) isn't showing any hits for retailers with availability - and, more ominously, no hits on the official Savage site.

There were a total of 6 versions, varying by where the loading port is and bolt-face size; I can't remember the other model numbers offhand.

Been pretty happy with the ones I've gotten in the past - hopefully my google-fu is weak and I'm just not seeing them...

You can do barrel swaps at home with any rifle. All you need is a few tools (action wrench, barrel vice, torque wrench), and a barrel swap can be conducted in ~5 min or less.

No need to limit yourself to savage threads.

The only advantage savage barrel threads have on torque prefits, is the ability to fit the same barrel to many different action brands and models, at the cost of an ugly barrel nut.
In my case I went the ugly route...
If and when competitions restart and if I get back on that horse, I'll go nutless.

Agreed. Best to pick an action you want to use first instead of thinking you HAVE to use a savage action. I lucked out I guess cause my customs use savage thread? LOL

In my personal case, I was running a Savage for which I had just purchased a custom barrel.
So when I wanted to switch actions a few weeks later I wanted to salvage the barrel.
Which made sense at the time to check for Savage barrel threads compatible actions.

That's when I had a very quick and meaningless episode with Ultimatum before quickly turning to Bighorn Origin.
My last LR keeper is on a Bighorn Origin action, couldn't be happier with that action for what I do with it.

Yes I've followed your builds on here. I have 2 nucleus actions which take savage threads. I wanted a 2 lug and after much debate, decided to standardize barrel tenon threads and got myself a bighorn origin. The origin is the nicest action I've ever felt. The nucleus is amazing, but the origin is the next level in my opinion. I'll be getting a tl3 next
