Well the local gunshop here has some Savage model 11 synthetics in 243, 300 win mag and 30-06, they come with a scope and are a detchable mag model, and they want $479 for one. I thought that was a great deal, so I was thinking about buying one for the action, and selling the rest to fund the new prodject (hopefully a f class 1000yrd) Would this be a good action to use? or should a guy buy a remington SPS and use that action? Also what caliber would you recomend I get, to build on? Thanks for all your help! :dancingbanana:

Absolutely nothing wrong at all with a savage action, they are strong and dependable.
A world record heavy gun class for 1 miile is held by a Savage in 7WSM, with a wood stock, to boot!:dancingbanana:

Might be just as easy and less expensive to start with a used rifle, rather than breaking a new one for the parts. A used rifle, private purchase, will be less expensive, and tax free. Make sure you get an action correctly sized for the cartridge you want to use. Boltheads can be easliy changed. A single shot action would be nice for an F class rifle. Receiver is potentially a bit stiffer. There are a variety of calibres which do well for F Class.

Your best bet is to get a used CIL 950T. These were Savage solid-bottom actions for target rifles. Many target shooters use them to this day (myself included). A solid-bottom action will be stiffer than an action with a magazine cutout, and since your goal is 1000-yard F-Class, you are looking at serious competition, and pretty well everyone in that sport uses a single-shot action.

My F class rifle is built off a Stevens action. Same as a Savage but a whole lot less money. You will need to get a Rifle Basix 2 aftermarket trigger if you like light pulls. These are excellent triggers. The Sharp Shooters Supply is also great but 1lb is about it. Not tried their 'match' trigger that is supposed to go a bit lighter.

Maybe change the bolt knob. Otherwise, put a quality barrel on and bed into a good fitting stock and have at it.

I have found no accuracy issues using an action with a mag opening. Look for my post on the 6.5 Mystic and you can see what my rifle looks like.

First 300m shoot end of the month.

I have never heard nor seen a left handed single shot action by Savage. Finding LH actions are tough enough. Stevens has been a RH action only.

Try SIR, Wholesale, Russels, and sponsors for this site. If you find used, most actions are interchangable for parts. Just check with whichever trigger manf you want to go with just to be sure it will work.

The new savage/stevens models will not be announced until Nov so check with their site. Then it will be 4 months to a year before they make it up here.

Savage has made L/H actions for some time and I have several real good shooters. New L/H actions are listed on the Savage website and both Russels and Wholesale list them on their websites.

Good Luck
