I had been wanting to try a Savage for a few years, and now I got a good deal on a 16fcss in 300WSM. I've been wondering about all the different model numbers Savage uses; Model 10, 11/111, 12, 14, 16/116, XP, Stevens 200. Are these just different models based on the same action, or are there different actions on the different models?

The all two number (eg. 16) series are short action. three number series (eg. 116) indicate that it is a long action. the letters following tell you if it has a mag, fluted barrel, muzzel brake ect. You could find a code list on their website.

Cheers.

Thanks for the response. I understand what you're saying, but what I mean is are the 10, 11, 12, 14, 16 SA's all the same action? Are the 111 and 116 the same action?

I own the Savage Edge in .308 and it is very accurate. It is also very cheaply made IMO, but it was inexpensive. The Stevens 200 and the Savage 11 both look like they have the same action with near identical bolt design. Not sure about the other Savage model numbers. I don't know who/what this gun will be for, but I would buy the Marlin X7 series (I also own a Marlin XS7 in 7mm-08) over any of the above guns any day. No comparison in my view, the Marlin is far superior. The bolt alone is worth the small difference in price and has 'real' cocking and sear mechanisms. The Marlin has a far far superior trigger mechanism. Possible down side to the Marlin...no open sights and blind magazine.

Sorry to get off topic a bit, but I wanted to let you know you have choices in this price range...

Like 308Bar said 11 is short and 111 is long. 16 and 116 are stainless short and long. The C means detachable clip. G is wood stock and F is synthetic. eg 11gcns is short action, blued, wood stock, with clip.
