I need a new rifle! :D

Long story short: I will sell two of my firearms to finance my new rifle, and I stopped my choice on the Savage 10 FCP-K and Savage 12 VLP, both in .223.

Can some of you guys please give me some infos or feedback one one of these two rifles? Or maybe suggest something in same price range with bull barrel and nice trigger. No Remington 700 please, don't like the stiff bolt handle. Rifle will mostly be use on bench or prone at the range, 200 meters, no extreme long range or competition.

Both are about the same length, same weight. 10 fcp-k have 24 inches barrel, 12 vlp have a 26 inches barrel with choice of 1/7 or 1/9 twist.

I like Savage rifles, love the accutrigger, tried a few at range, I have a Mark II BTV .22lr, a Axis, over all they have good prices for the results you get I think.

I'll bet you'll not look back with the 12vlp. Wood is your ally and just feels better. Be sure to spend some time learning stress free bedding for the rifle and you'll be good to shoot some bug holes. 1-7 for heavy bullets, 1-9 for lighter ones (see the berger site for some suggestions) My 2cents.

Of your choices I would go with the 12vlp with 1/9.
I like the stainless on wood and I don't care much for brakes. I'd choose 1/9 because of the 200 yd range. You can shoot anything up to 70gr VLDs through most 1/9. There's little to no advantage using 80 or 90gr at 200yd.

That's what I'd choose, and why. Now you gotta decide. ;) Let us know what you pic.

add; I made the assumption you're loading your own. If you're not, you shouldn't even consider the 1/7.

I went to Londero Sport and held a rifle with an accustock. Didn't like the synthetic stock too much, like the grip is too small for my hands(Im 6'1"). I like black guns :p , so I might get one with a wooden stock, and have it painted with a black clear coating.

Another model I'm taking in consideration too is the Savage 12 BVSS http://www.savagearms.com/firearms/model/12bvss

I have a model 12 BVSS in .223 that shoots great, sub .5 moa with handloads. Just got it glass bedded last week, new bolt handle yesterday and will install new scope(45x leupold) this week, had 20x Sightron before(that is going on my Rem 5R) Only other thing is a single shot follower installed and teflon tape on stock to slide better on rest. (Sling studs removed) Very well made rifle, my first Savage and probably not my last.
Cheers Roscoe

I was wrestling with the same choices recently, and eventually decided that for a couple hundred extra I would go with the model 12 LRPV. The extra money gets you a quality HS stock and the target accutrigger, adjustable down to a few ounces. I am very satisfied so far.

:agree: My BVSS shoots similar to yours. I skim bedded the action & played with the accu trigger as advised by Gerry at Mystic Precision. I find that 75 gr Hornady match bullets & Varget give me tiny groups. :)

I vote for the FCP-K !!!
I own one in .308 and I just love it !!!

I must admit the model 12 in wood and stainless looks pretty good too !!!

IMO these are good rifles for the price, you can't go wrong with one or another...

Nice rifle ben :)

Just not sure if I like the feel of the Accustock, feels like my girlfriend"s Savage Mark II F, just a bit bigger. Those of you who have Accustock, is it really good, or should I get after-market stock? The one I held was from a rifle that has normal barrel, not a heavy one. Is the Accustock size bigger on the 10-FCP-K ?

Got a 10-FCP-K with Accustock and a Leupold scope. Virtually "anyone" who has had a chance with my rifle can't get enough of it. Very accurate and powerful. It's a 308 so the ammo is also a bit cheap. Personally, I love it and don't think will be selling it for any time soon, unless someone's doing a direct trade with their 12Palma.

Will have to make a gut wrenching decision:D

Will have to choose between the 10FCP-K & the 12 LRPV Left Port

Both are looking nice.
10 have a magazine
12 have target accutrigger
10 is cheaper
12 has a HS Precision fiberglass stock
10 is fluted with muzzlebreak
12 is fluted stainless steel
:dancingbanana: :runaway::xes

Hard to make a choice!
Kinda scared to not like single shot if taking the 12
Kinda scared to no like the Accustock if taking the 10

Don't want to spend buying an after-market stock if I don't like the accustock
Can't get myself to like the stock color on the 12 VLP or BVSS & I don't feel like re-painting them. Talked to my gunsmith, he was telling me it's a bad idea to try to change the color of these stock, won't come out like the grey/black laminated stock from factory, and could cause some damages to the UV protection to the glue holding the layers of wood when the get in contact with varnish. if they could have color of the 12 FT/R, would be nicer. "Wheat colored" stock, Stainless steel barrel and black scope is too much colors for my taste. Like em dark :p Lightweight Varminter series have only 24 inches barrels.

Arrrgh, hard to make a choice :D

...End of rant, thanks for listening ;)

I had a model 12 VLP. Very good rifle. I ended up modifying pretty much everything but the action ... just something you have the option to do with the Savage.

I would ABSOLUTELY BUY THE 1/7 TWIST BARREL!!!!

The 1/7 will still let you shoot light bullets just fine however you will also be able to shoot heavier bullets like 80 and 90gr VLDs and you rifle will be capable of hitting things accurately out to 1000yrds should you even get the chance, a 1/9 will be more of a struggle at this distance. It doesn't cost more to get the 1/7 so I'd say you should be smart about it. Switching barrels is expensive.

Another option is the T3 Varmit. Be patient and watch the EE and there is a good chance you could pick one up for the same price of a Savage after you factor in the taxes.

Heya Tikka223,
2 Questions for you, how would react the 45/55/62 gr bullets in a 1/7 24/26 inches barrel at 200 yards. How heavy is the barrel on the T3 Varmint, if you compare to your VLP you had?

Thanks :)

Might be long before I see the posts, going out camping for 3 days in few minutes :D

Get the 12 VLP / BVSS / LRPV and post a ton of gun #### so that I can live vicariously through your wallet.
I wish! :D If my wallet was as thick as I wish, I would have a nice house, a nice reloading station and a nice TRG42 & a nice SIG SSG 3000 & a nice 10/110 BA :D

Sorry I can't comment on that. My Tikka has a heavy Shillen 1/7 26" barrel. Ive never tried shooting the lighter stuff through it but 24.4gr of Varget and 80gr VLDs are giving me consistent .5MOA or better all the way past 600m.

I'm sure others can chime in with how the T3 Varmint shoots. I also mentioned the Tikka because of you comment about Remingtons having a stiff bolt. All the T3s that I've handles are so smooth a fly could push the bolt closed.

Forgot to mention that the T3s have quite a light and very rigid fiberglass stock. As a result it may be a bit more nose heavy than the VLP but I would be surprised of they are very close in weight. The VLP did feel heavy.
