I heard the Savage rimfire factory in Lakefield, Ontario is shutting down. Does anyone know if their is any truth to this? If so, why?

Friends of mine, a few of which worked there. Here's what I know as fact. They just laid off 40-50 people due to overproduction. Not enough guns being sold, both for the rimfires and centerfires. What I was told, but not fact, is that they are shutting the factory down and moving it to either the States or Mexico. They are shutting the factory down and going to make rimfires at Westfield. And a bunch of other rumours. I'm just curious if anyone knows anything that I don't. I think it's too bad. Although an American company, I was proud that my Savage rimfires were Canadian made. I'd hate to lose that fact. Hell, I hate to lose any Canadian business/manufacturing, for any reason. It's too bad. I know if they could sell the rimfires at Canadian Tire, like they used to, or even WalMart, they'd have a good Canadian market. Although I am a proud Canadian, I hate the damned gun laws.
Sorry for the rant.

I guess it's my fault. I was almost set on buying a new Savage 64F (and would have been especially pleased with it because I knew they are made in Canada,) but there wasn't one on display when I went to the shop and I got a Marlin 795 instead.

Surprised they sold ANY rimfires in Canada after all the griping about badly made rifles on this site. Kinda makes you wonder if they will be missed. I was told all the Savage CFs were made in the States and only the lowly rimfire was made in Canada. True?

From what I knew, they made the Savage and Steven rimfires. They used to make the Striker, and were making Steven Favourites when this crap happened. The only problem I have with Savage rimfires was the 64. I found it jammed easily. Other than that, I love every Savage I own.

Well, I absolutely love my Model 93R17 GLV, and I've loved both Mk II GL's that I've owned. If they made a lefty Mk II with a heavy barrel, I'd pick one up tomorrow. I also like the 111 FL .30-06 that I have. Savage makes excellent rifles, and the price point is just a bonus.
