Got a smoking deal on this rifle with a slightly damaged Boyd's stock. Bought the steel trigger guard, mag well and mag bottom. I have all the 375 Ruger reloading components and dies already. Looking for 16" barreled rifle to carry in the thick bush river bottoms that hold the animals here. I'm not sure how complicated the gunsmithing would be to make the feeding work. I would get it glassed and pillar bedded, crossbolted etc. If anyone has gone 30-06 to 375 Ruger, I would be curious how it worked out. When my other rifle is done I'll ask the gunsmith about this project also.

My time with the Savage Axis project rifles didn't impress me with the quality of materials in the action. If you could find a magnum bolt head that fit, I would still not use this action for this much horsepower.

So far, there are no magnums listed in this action.

Good point. A barrel swap would negate the cheap part of the plan I think. I don't want to just end up with an expensive Axis. Savage sent me the wrong bottom metal and mag bottom too. Probably just get it chopped glassed and bedded.

Many 30-06 rifles have been rebarreled to 9.3X62. No alterations to the action rails, feed ramp, or bolt face needed. Just start using 285-325 gr bullets at over 2300 fps, and walk anywhere you care to.

I am fond of saying that a guy with a 9.3X62 has a 375 with five in the magazine. ;)

Examined my parts from Savage the other day (steel mag bottom, mag well, trigger guard). They are short action, won't fit... Called Savage, the lady said it was a mistake, there are no parts to fit an Axis to get rid of the plastic mag well and mag bottom. They used the rifle's serial # to check. Savage will credit my credit card and send a plastic trigger guard. I won't rebarrel this rifle, because for the cost I could buy a 375 Ruger rifle.
