Savage axis (any cal) vs mosin nagant

Well, the modern Axis will be more accurate, but "performs better" will be harder to say.

The Mosin is going to be bomb-proof, utterly reliable, and you can club down a few Nazis with it at -50 below and then carry on; probably won't get far doing that with your Axis!
 
Apples to oranges that. Mosin is a 60+ year old gun with a trigger pull that's like a trip to the gym and coarse iron sights. Accurate though. The axis is a modern hunting rifle with modern features like scope mounts.
If this is going to be your hunting rifle, buy the hunting rifle, though I'd take a look at the Ruger American, a different Savage or a used rifle over the Axis. Better hunting ammunition selection and availability in a standard calibre over 7.62x54 Russian too.
Don't get me wrong, I have four Mosins and love em. There's just better rifles for hunting, until you get a hankering for a classic milsurp hunt with iron sights....

If it's for fun plinking out to 300 yards, go watch Enemy At The Gates, therein lies your answer ;)
 
Mosin is fun at the range. Surplus ammo is relatively inexpensive for it right now too, but if you want a scope, grab the Axis.
 
I got a Savage Axis in 223, I don't really like it. I will use it for now but I wish someone would make a lever gun in a lever caliber between 204 and 230! Neither has a great trig pull and neither has a smooth follow up shot on their actions. Mosin is heavier and the AXIS is not heavy enough. Mosin bullet proof and AXIS is entry level.
 
My axis has a decent 4lb trigger pull that breaks like glass, smooth action, and is so far doing 2.5" groupings at just under 400 yards.

I'm not sure there is a mosin that can do that :p

But the mosin is a cheap fun plinking rifle!
 
I personally hate the Axis, but I might buy a model 11 in .223. I shot my Mosin today with cast bullets and I love it more every time I take it out. Also if you hit someone over the head with an Axis as hard as you can, it probably won't hold zero.
 
My Axis was very accurate, I actually hated how accurate it was for the price lol. I wish I handloaded when I had it, because I'm sure it could have been even better, and I likely would have kept it (shooting factory 25-06 was getting expensive at the time). With a 5 minute trigger mod, it'll break at 4lbs and is actually pretty decent (especially for a free mod). As far as reliability, Jerry (Mystic Precision) made a series of videos testing the reliability and durabilty of the Axis (read: beat the sh*t out of one). I've had quite a buddies with them, and they've all shot and worked very well.

I have a McGowen Savage pre-fit on the way for a new hunting rifle project, and honestly if I don't find a decently priced model 10 donor action when it arrives, then I will likely be building on an Axis. My biggest complaint was the stock, and with Boyd's making a variety now, and with aftermarket triggers available, I think it's definitely a viable option.

Mine was 4lbs without a mod.

As for abuse, I've abused my Axis and still haven't had a single problem and I'm still using the Bushnell scope that came with the gun from the factory. :D

Nice, mine was around 6-7 from the factory, either way, super easy fix. I see Boyd's is even making lefty stocks now, I think that's sealed the deal.
 
I doubt a Savage axis (and many other) modern sporting rifles would not survive the military qualification process.

If I had to choose just one rifle to have, I'd go with the Mosin.
