Hey all, not to sure where to put this post. I current have a Savage Axis in .223 that seems to have problems with some primers. My first guess is that the firing pin spring might be weak. Is anybody aware of aftermarket parts for the Savage Axis? Kind of hoping that some beefier/better springs might fix the problem.

TIA.

Are you sure its spring pressure
I have an axis in 223 that has trouble with chinese 556 milsurp. For me the spring wasn't the problem. I had to take apart my bolt and lap the mating surfaces to get the firing pin to protrude further. The machining on the inside of my bolt was quite rough. once polished it works like a champ. i was amazed that for me 2 thousands made all the difference if memory serves me right my firing pin protrusion is .044 after i polished the firing pin mating surfaces

and no you probably shouldn't put 556 in your 223 rifle.

556 in a 223 rifle is fine. Manufacturers may say otherwise but that's all due to lawyers, liability, ect. I have yet to see one confirmed report of 556 blowing up a 223 gun.

OP, my 270 win axis doesn't like CCI primers. Goes bang every time with federal primers though. Factory ammo (fed, rem and win) all worked flawlessly too.

No, I'm not!

Hmmm, never thought of this. Probably worth measuring the protrusion and then take apart the bolt for a look. Thanks for the tips.

When I was trying to figure out why I was getting light primer strikes (which I never really sorted out, I just switched primers lol) someone suggested my protrusion was not enough, and my primers were not cratering as much as they should.

Here is the thread I started when I was going through this. Might find something in there. There were pictures of well-cratered primers from someone elses rem700 in there somewhere, but you might have to randomly click on stuff because of the photo bucket bullcrap. (You can still click a photo and get taken to the photo bucket site, it just doesn't appear in the thread) https://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php/1541598-Reloads-didn-t-fire

Well I have a 111 that had the same problem. The 111 at some point switched to the 3 spring system like the Axis. It turns out the main spring was too short. It gave me miss fires constantly. Once a gunsmith in Ontario sent me new springs, all my troubles went away. I'm guessing thats your issue. BTW the largest spring was at least one turn too short compared to the replacement I was sent.
