I won an auction last week for a savage axis .223
very clean rifle some marks on the stock but nothing major, also came with a scope and rings.
Gave it a clean and an oil and I'm ready for the range.
Got the rifle for $300 so was it a good price or should I trade it into something else?

Heavy barrel?
Accutrigger?
What distances do you plan on shooting?

Best way to tell if it’s a shooter, is to shoot it.

You can throw enough money at anything to make it what you want, but deciding what you want beforehand helps in the direction to go

Not a HB and no accutrigger
Just want to use it as a trainer really before a get a better quality bolt gun or use as a trade
I'm guessing I over paid lol
Oh well

I think the price was not unreasonable since it also had a scope and rings. Assuming the barrel isn't shot out it should be a sub MOA rifle with the right ammo. It will be a great starting point.

The Op's version typically sold for $450-$499 so $300 isn't out of line. Precision rifle? No but these things can shoot sub MOA with the right ammo. Try something like Federals Gold match 69gr Sierra Match kings and you might be pleasantly surprised. Being .223 there is lots of cheap ammo choices for general plinking. Anyway for a modest investment you can have a heck of a lot of fun at the range.

Sounds like the perfect beginner rifle to me. You can't find much else that's ready to go for 3 hundred bucks. Plenty of cheap 223 ammo out there.

And the best part about it is you won't have a fit if you bang it up a bit.

Get shooting and have fun.
