Savage Axis

Are the Savage Axis any good? When they first came they got a bad rap but just wondering if theyve improved?

Kinda thinking of one in 7-08 as loner/truck gun.

I have a .308 in stainless that I bought new in box from my local gun store for $250 and I love it. The number one complaint that I have heard is about the polymer stock, how it flexes and how cheap it feels. These are primarily from the same people who would buy target rifles and complain about how heavy it is when they have to carry it on a 20km hike into the bush or up a mountain. I use mine as an unmodified backup, back country rifle with a sling, Weaver low mounts and a Bushnell 3-9 or 6-24 if I am in central Canada or up in the mountains.

If you can get a 783 for the same or less money or maybe even a few dollars more go for that. I also suggest 270 rather than 7-08.

I have 2 axis, love them. Yes there is flex on the stock. Fill it with foam. I like the axis better then my 783. Great value worth it as a truck gun.

I have the axis heavy barrel in 223 (pre accu trigger) and like it for what it is.
New ones have the accu trigger, I had to do a trigger job on mine because the non accu triggers are pretty heavy out of the box.


Can't compare it to a high(er) end bolt action but good bang for your buck imo.

It's a good bang for your buck and is a price point gun. I did a trigger job on mine and lowered it to just over 3lbs from the ridiculous 7lbs from factory. It's chambered in a .270. I get 1/2" groups at 100 yards. The scope it came with is nothing to be desired in my opinion.

It will hit exactly where its pointed its up to you to point it

its cheap, tough and accurate all you really want in a rifle, its not pretty, fancy or envy inducing but since none of those three things kill deer they aren't the priority

Unless you have the money then sure there are lots of nicer guns

For $250 sure they are ok. Any more then that there is a lot of other cheap rifles out there

I would spend a few extra to get the Axis II. Better stock and accutrigger.

I have two both stainless 223 and 308 and other than the flex that can be corrected great accurate out of the box guns

They are certainly acceptable for an entry gun, they have some shortcomings like the plastic mag release and ergonomics are not great, but they are light and shoot well, and are easy to sell when you want to upgrade.

At least if you cut a coil off the spring it lightens the Axis trigger a bit and ignition has still been 100%

As a gun to be able to shoot .223 and fart around at the range it was worth the money, although ejection is sometimes iffy.

Never saw that problem out of the bigger cals.
