I've been contemplating picking up a rifle in 17 for a while. Had more or less settled on a RPR but saw the savage b17 precision model on sale. With the discount and another $50 manufacturer rebate figured i would take the plunge. The MDT chassis was a nice bonus.

I can't find much in the way of reviews. Anyone handle or shoot one of these rigs? Opinions?

I can only comment on the B-22 Precision which i bough the moment it was available. I use it for casual target shooting off a bench at 100 yards. Personally I love the set up overall. It's a heavy beast, but for bench shooting it's great. The trigger is the red target accutriger, which is much lighter than the regular Savage trigger. You can't seat the mag on a closed bolt, which is a bit annoying. I initially had a few failure to extract, but I added a second spring clip on the bolt which resolved the issue. Some people contacted Savage and apparently got a stronger spring clip. The shorter barrel does not impact accuracy, I did not chrony the bullets to compare with my other 22. it seems to like CCI SV amo.

I had a B22 Precision for a little while and it was an absolute tack driver. I ended up selling to a friend to fund a Vudoo, but I think you get a lot for your money with the chassis it comes with. A little note to the guys that own them, do yourself a favour and remove the factory pic rail and de grease and loctite screws as they come soaked in oil and just barely over hand tight from Savage.

Rifleman has it right abut the mounts. I have a B22SV and I shot about 200 rounds or so, getting around 3/4" groups (or better) and then 'all of a sudden' shots were going 6-8" off horizontally. I had seen someone comment about the mounts on a forum and so checked. The scope was moving almost a mm at both mounts. Tightened both and now no probs. That warning should be in the manual; my 64 never came loose in the 5-6 years I've had it - factory tight from day one.

I've found this to be good practice on all rifles - on two piece ring/bases i usually de grease and throw a little bedding compound under the rail for extra stability (I'm a belt and suspenders kind of guy :) ).
