So took out my Savage B22 for the second time and these were my groups. Looking for some input from those that have shot for much longer than I currently have. Ammo is Federal 36 grain from 45 yards (indoor so that's all they have) Center is 4" other ones are 2"

Good? Bad? So-so?

Fair.

The ammo is important. High velocity ammo is probably not the best accuracy choice.

Here is a 50 yard target I shot last week with my semi-auto Ruger. I tried CCI stand vel ammo, SK Plus and Ely Force.
10 shot groups

My bolt rifle is a bit better than the semi-auto. A Norinco 522

my Savage Mark II loves the CCI standard velocity - your groups? are fair without knowing how the rifle was set up (rest front/rear) etc
savages generally are excellent rifles just have to find 'what the rifle' likes -

Things to consider about your rifle grouping.

Parallax. If you have something like a 3-9 scope on the rifle, the parallax will be set for 100 to 125 yards. At 50 yards there is at least a half inch of variation. With the rifle supported front and back, move your eye sideways and watch the crosshairs move on the target. That movement becomes a bigger group. The solution is a scope with a parallax adjustment. Move the adjustment while looking through the scope, and adjust for no parallax shift. This may or may not correspond to the numbers on the scope.

Action screw. Shoot some groups with it fairly not tight, and then tighten in 1/4 turn increments. Find the tightness that works best.

Ammo. Try different ammos. I did, and found that SK Plus and CCI Standard vel were the best.

Thanks for the feedback everyone, will start trying different ammo now, especially the CCI as it seems to be the 'go to' ammo for the Savage rifles....

Hey Wizzerd-that's a Savage rifle I'm actually a bit interested in, though my luck with Savage rimfires has been a bit spotty if I'm being honest. I've had at least 2 of them, and I never achieved the kind of accuracy I'm told they're capable of. In fairness, I also didn't try as many ammo types as I do now, not even close. I'd bring 4-5 types thinking that was really being thorough, I've since learned you can try 10 or more before you find the one that shines. I'm no expert, but have enthusiastically been shooting 22s for just over 30 years, and a number of rifles have come and gone in that time. I'm not lying when I say that I've only ever owned 1 rifle that shot impressive groups with high velocity ammo, and I only got it a few months ago. Had it not proven to like it, I'd have never believed it-HV ammo isn't really what people use if tight groups are the goal.

This photo is from a "load testing day" maybe 2-3 years ago. Lots of options, found one it liked more than all others..but this rifle deserves another day in the sun. I now try probably 2X that number of ammo types when I test a new rifle these days. In fact, the only thing I'm guaranteed to walk OUT of a gun store with is a new type of 22 ammo if they have one I haven't tried. Without exception. Most recently, a German brand (orange box) called BBM.

@ 50 yards, with a decent rest, "good groups" to me=all the holes touching. After 2x 5 round mags of any type...I want to see that happening or I move to the next. Some I know are fliers, some I can tell it's me...but if the gun likes it, it's pretty easy to tell. If I'm not sure, I put the contenders on a different list (=short list :) )...and re-try when I'm refreshed the next time.
