Savage bolt issues???

Hey Fellas,

I was cycling my bolt in my Savage XP in 22-250 today, and noticed that the bolt handle wants to rise up, after being locked down. It usually results in a misfire if it is up a touch. It will raise up 1/4 of the way at times.

I've noticed this in the past, but always made a mental note to make sure it was all the way down before shooting. But in the heat of the moment we all know how well that goes....

Anyways I'm just looking for some insight as to why this is happening.

Any ideas?

Try to give a bit more info. Is it rising up on it's own? Are you doing something to lift it up? Mechanisms are designed to not fire when partially out of battery; be thankful for that.

Highwind, where is that "C" shaped spring with a ball located? Is it the concave washer that goes between the lugs?

Did you buy the rifle new? If so, how old is it? That might be a warranty issue if it hasn't been messed with. When I was younger and a bit more foolish, to slim down the looks of a 110 I took of the rear baffle to make the rifle appear slimmer; that modification produced much the same results. Highwind may be right in assuming that clip is missing, as it appears to place the locking lugs under a slight bit of tension.

I bought the gun 6 years ago at my LGS.. It has done it since new, but hasn't been shot a bunch.. I tore it apart and cleaned everything, so we will see what happens now. Seems to be better.

I just wrote a response but for some unknown reason it didn't get posted up.

So you need to check the Savage Baffle Assembly. There is a Ball bearing in that part and it needs to be in place. Needs to be seated properly; needs a small amount of oil. Check for dirt, sand, crud or anything that would create a problem when cycling the action. Bolt ought to be clean, and firing pin should move in and out. A bit of pressure from one's finger will determine if the pin is moving as it ought to.
