Savage bolt material?

I'm not sure if it is thick enough for fluting. The bolt body is probably not that hard, have you tested it? The bolt head is a seperate piece all together so there would be no reason to harden the body, would there?

I had it all set up in the mill. For some reason I thought I should check it with a file before hitting the go button.
The file wouldn’t touch it. They are very hard. I have had a reply on another forum saying they are 1020 steel with a carbo nitriding hard surfacing. I am guessing just for wear characteristics.
I’m thinking grinding the flutes is the only way it can be done.

I had to mill the back end of the bolt body on my rifle to adjust the primary extraction. I used a carbide end mill and had no problem getting through the case hardening, it's only a few thou deep.

I assume you are using a ball nosed end-mill right? If you have one in carbide give it a try-just dont do it all in one cut!!

I do have a carbide ball nose. But I think I am going to try grinding them in. I m going to see if i can fit a small grinder in the mill some how and use a shop vac to keep the grinding dust at a min.
Thanks for the help fellas

You can anneal it then just re-harden the cocking cam and probably be alright. I was going to do some machining on mine (to install dovetailed inserts) and found it to be very hard as well. I elected to not machine the body. Regards, Bill.

Some sucess grinding the fluting in, I will have to work on a different stone shape.

By hand with a die grinder. Not

I have a CNC mill.
Just made a quick grinding attachment for it to try out.SAvage bolts are very hard.
I will be turning the grinder so it cuts across the bolt instead of parrallel, Hopefully will make a wider flute. The white hose is a vacum, sucks up any dust.
Stay tuned.
Hears a pick.

HAHA oh man. For a second I thought you were serious about using the die grinder. That sounds like something I would do, come to think of it.

Very cool though. Gives a really neat look.

The Savage bolt bodies are 1020 case hardened .012" to .015" deep to a hardness of at least 89 R15N or about the same as 60Rc.
