Can you guys tell me if the Savage cub cocks the striker either on opening or closing of the bolt or does it have to be manually pulled back after closing the bolt? I'm interested in getting one for my 7yr old son. We have an ancient FN single shot in the safe but having to manually pull back the striker takes the fun out of shooting it for the little guy. He is a trooper and insists on doing it himself but it is a little much for his small hands. The other negative is that it only shoots shorts and is a little finicky loading and extracting. Any help would be appreciated.

Yes, fingertip adjustable peep sights, hardwood stock. The Cub has peeps, but they are not fingertip adjustable, as a small flathead is needed. The Cub has a nice lami ate stock, but it is heavier than the Rascals hwood. This might help.

My daughter has a Cub-T (Thumbhole stock). It cocks upon opening the bolt. It also has a Williams adjustable peep sight
Rear sight is adjustable, and the Rascal is available with a wood stock. You can see a photo of one on Savage's site. Here is my recent "range report" on the Rascal I got my daughter;

Something about this gun screams "synthetic stock" to me though, and if my daughter was a bit younger, I might have sprung for one of the brighter offerings. I took this photo from Savage's FB page, looks like everything but the safety orange synthetic and wood Rascal.
