Savage Drop-In Barrels

The following was sent to me by Wade Hull of Shilen Rifle Barrels pertaining to exporting their barrels to Canada. Looks like you Maple leaf's now have a good source for pre-fit barrels.

Shilen has no problem exporting to Canada. All we require is:

1. An order by fax (972-875-5402) or by email ( jennifer.hull@shilen.com ).

2. An International Import Certificate attained at 1-800-267-8376. They will need to know quantity, caliber and dollar value.

3. There will be a charge of $15.00 resulting from sending the permit next-day to Customs when we are ready to ship. Our cost is $14.40 from USPS.

The top two items are what we need to obtain an export license. It takes 2 to 4 weeks to get the license from the time we receive the order and certificate. Currently un-turned barrel blanks are running 6 to 8 weeks. Due to the success of adding this product line, Savage barrels are running 10 to 12 weeks. We are not happy with the delivery time being so long and assure you we are working to improve this.

AWESOME.....that is the company I wanted to get my barrel from...THANKS

I have recently been researching this topic myself, I am unsure on the specific company guidelines for export but another couple of names I have heard dropped about ready to go savage barrels are pac nor and eabco. Can't provide links or such cause I'm surfing on the crackberry but they come up right away on google. Hope that helps, also poking around on midway usa aand brownells websites can't hurt.

Has anyone here actually used one of these pre fit barrels, and if so how much of an improvement are they over the factory barrels?

What kind of results and groups are people getting using these barrels?

Just be aware that it is impossible to optimally headspace a chamber without mating to the specific action you are using. Every action has its own tolerances. Furthermore, you are not likely getting the optimal throat for the type of bullet you are going to use. Depending on the barrel though, it should be at least equal the quality of barrel it is replacing. It is certainly cheaper than buying a match grade barrel and having it custom fitted.

On the Savage Shooters forum many folks have reported excellent accuracy from the various suppliers of drop-in barrels including Shilen. If I think of it later I'll try to find a link to the particular thread I have in mind. Cheers.

Did you ask any gunsmiths? IIRC, guys like Blue Mountian Sports in NB have some barrels in stock and there is no reason they can't make you a pre-fit fairly soon if they have a blank.
