I picked up a Savage with serial number 0C0###x with matching bolt & mag. Uncommon? or not really no big deal at all? Probably a little bit collectable in the States I am thinking.

Your Savage is a very early No.4. It should have most of the British style parts, but made in the US. Find the book by Stratton on the No.4 rifle series. He has some very good drawings and tables of parts that will help you check how far off 'factory' your rifle is.

It is easy to tell an early one because they will still have the bolt head release at the back of the travel. If yours has the no4mk1# slot, then it is a late production and with the 0C and 5 digits afterward, as Woodchopper has pointed out, it is just over the million mark.

The slot was a weak point, particularily on the savages.

Do you mean that after 99C9999, the serial went to 0C00001?

According to other sources, the prefix was changed to Oscar-Charlie (not Zero-Charlie) with five digits following. 99C9999-OC63036 (highest recorded)

I for one would be interested to see a picture of the prefix to see if it is a 0 or O.

Early Savages did not have 4 figures following the "C" until rifle one thousand was built. We've all seen the photo of rifle 0C1, the "T" conversion; I have 0C469.
