New Savage FCP k 223

Initial outing with Fedral 55gr HPBT was dismal....1.5in mOA @ 100m. Great range conditions too.
I'm pretty sure these things shoot...heavier bullet I'm thinkin??

What is peoples experience with this and or similar Savage 223 1/9 heavy barrels??

My 2nd Savage...always a 700 guy till they pooched them up....

Factory and or handload suggestions/experience if y'all please.

Thanks

I have a Savage 12 BTC 9 twist and it does not really like the lighter bullets at all 69g match kings are what it shoots and shoots well.

I have the FCP-K. I have tried 75 Amax, but they did not stabilize. I think the reason is that I use IVI brass (thicker walls than most) and I can't stuff enough powder in there to get it up to a decent speed.

My best load is IVI brass, fed. primer, 24.6gr of IMR 4895 and a 53gr Horn. Vmax boattail. I have also tried 55gr flatbase Vmax. They worked well also, but not quite as good as 53's. If you use a thinner walled case, you will probably find your good load is a touch more powder (work up slowly), but definitely try the 53 grainers. I have not had any problems with Fed. primers.
I am not concerned with muzzle velocity, only accuracy out to 300yds, so you might want to try different powders if you have a need for speed.

I have also tried 69gr Sierra hpbt, and they are fine. I want to try Horn. 68gr hpbt (I think??) but haven't yet. I would also like to try a different bullet in the 70 plus range.

I have also worked up loads for Varget and liked that powder, but that stuff is crazy expensive now, so I'm gonna stick with IMR for now.

I bought my gun off the EE and paid a little more than I wanted to, but it is my favorite and most accurate gun. I put a SIII 8-32x56 on top and I am very, very happy!... C.

My fcp-k in 223 with 1:9 twist eats Norc Surplus ammo and spits it out at 1 MOA ALL DAY.

If your having trouble though try the Hornady 75g Amax. It's super duper awesome and admittedly the heavier rounds seem to be the best match for this rifle.

75 grain Hornadys work great with my 1 in 9 twist Savage, however shot some 50 grain handloads from a buddy at 300 yards and they performed well..

My Model 11 Hog Hunter 20" .223 loves Nosler 69gr BTHP Match. It's our go-to cartridge for Thundershot testing with the .223 Remington at up to 300 meters. I have some Hornady and Nosler 77gr BTHP but haven't tried them yet; generally you want 1-8" or 7" for that bullet weight (bullet length, to be proper).

Got out yesterday with some hravier match ammo......

Banged off several ragged lil holes @100m....perfect weather and range conditions.

Sellier Ballot 69gr match and Hornady 69gr match
Both were brilliant....circular lil ragged grps!!!

Very happy

Seems that 22.5gr of IMR 4895 with the 69gr Nosler CC rounds are a sweet spot in my FCP-K. I take it bunny hunting, headshots only, last one at 172 yards. Last year I used it with 60 gr vmax, with good results as well, saves a step field dressing since you don't have to cut off the head.

The amax's and 69smk's both work good with varget and br-4 primers. Winchester brass sucks. If you can, try Lapua. It seems a little expensive, but it last so long it will end up being cheaper.
