Savage FP-10 question

I'm purchasing my first precision rifle. I'm buying a used 20" bull barrel Savage FP-10 .308 1 in 10 twist. Its mounted on a Choate tool ultimate sniper stock and has an IOR 2.5-10 optic. I would have preferred this in a 24" barrel but this buy is a good deal. What type of decrease in bullet velocity should I expect with a 20 " barrel over a 24"? The rifle has the accutrigger, bipod , and a camo paint job. I've attached a pix.

Depends on the bullet and the powder, but not much.....

I was using 178 amax in a Tikka Tactical with a 24" barrel and was getting 2725fps, the same rounds in an LTR (20")were 2690
 
Thanks for the info. Do you think a 2.5-10 zoom is good match for a 20" barrrel? I'm new to this stuff. I use an Eotech on my .223 carbine but a scope and bolt gun is new to me. With the price of ammo, maybe a bolt gun is a good investment. I got the whole package and 380 rounds of ammo for under 900 USD. The economy here in the states suck. People are selling everything to make the ends meet. Hopefully , I'll give it a good home and helped somebody pay some bills.

My 10 fp likes hand loads, I have the 26inch model with the Choate stock. Call Higgson powder and get a lee loading set It will cost about 150. to get started. You can reload your old brass for about .35 and you will probably out shoot match ammo if you only neck size the cases.
 
if your doing loading BUY A LOAD BOOK FROM A REPUTABLE MANUFACTURE

You can ask about load tips and such but load data from the internet should not be trusted blindly i would not doubt a hyper extream far left anti would be beyond handing out bad load data trying to get someone to use it and blow them selfs up i have heard of crazyer things that biguts have done(like the fact that the president of handgun control inc owning a hand gun and having a california concealed carry permit)

every one i have known who does hand loads when they try someone elses load says is reduce it and work back up

also listen to manurfactures recomendations when starting out yes blue dot loads might sound cool but the guys doing them have a better idea then a person just starting out of whats safe
