I’m having issues with my FVSR. It won’t grab the fired case and snatch it out of the chamber when I cycle the bolt. It gets better when I try to go extra fast but still screws up fairly often. I hoped I could use the mk2 for my snowshoe rifle this year because my 597 gave me a hard time at -40 last year. It’s not even cold yet and this bolt gun is driving me crazy! Any ideas?
 
When i had a mk2, i increased the depth of ejector cut in the barrel and never had another failure to eject. You have to take the barrel off to make the mod though.
 
Gotcha. So if I have stuff in the ejector relief I might be jamming it up too. I’ll try a deep clean in the ejector cut. If the case doesn’t come out the first time it always does they second time I cycle the bolt after I pull the mag. Might just be a crud buildup. I’ll have a look. Thanks!
 
Crud in the ej-relief is #1 issue with many 22s. #2 for the MKs is the C-spring that holds the ejector-hook. My B22 doesn't have that issue yet - under 3K rounds - but I've read that 'doubling-up' that spring gives enough enough tension. Many threads about this prob on here and RFC.
 
HI Squirrel - Yep, this is a very common problem, ESPECIALLY with Savage Mark II's, and ESPECIALLY with CCI ammo with wax lube.

A couple of things to try.

First, you can contact Savage customer service, they are usually excellent at sending out replacement extractor-cartridge guide-Cclip packages, as they know its very common. If the rifle is fairly new, they will send them for free.

Second option - you can try putting a SECOND C-clip over the first to give the extractor more grab.

Third, some folks sharpen up the extractor for more grab. (Plenty of YouTube vids about these options).

As jhvan mentions, some people do deepen the ejector cut in the barrel. If the rifle is newer, maybe leave this option last. It may be the best solution (newer Savage B models have a completely conical area around the chamber, so apparently don't get this issue very often), but it's a one-and-done step. May make it a bit harder if you want to sell your rifle at some point.

I think most Savage owners resign themselves to occasionally playing with and/or replacing the extractor and c-clip spring.

I was about to post the exact thing, CCI waxy ammo? It can stick in lots of chambers, especially in the cold... I have sighted in a new scope with CCI had it stick, and they ran Center-X for hundreds of rounds with no issues.
 
My first Mk 2 would FTE most of the time with Winchester Wildcat (and 333/555 bulk Winchester), and frequently (maybe 30%?) With CCI mini mags.

Everything else I've tried (Federal 525 bulk, federal champion SV, cci standard, Aguila, Remington, eley sport, probably others) have had no issues with ejection.

I just don't use CCI mini mags in that gun, and I just don't buy Winchester at all. I haven't had any fte problems with my 2nd mk2 but I have not tried minimags or Winchester in it. In fact I think I've only shot cci standard in it....

I’ve cleaned the reliefs, squeezed the spring, deburred the ejector and extractor and cleaned up the bolt as well. Going to try it again this weekend. I often shoot cci standard and have noticed the wax before. I always figured it was buildup of wax in the chamber that was the issue. Hopefully a squeeze of the spring and a better cleaning will help so I don’t have to pull the barrel and work on the reliefs. It was Aguila that jammed up on me last weekend. Shot great though!
 
Hi Squirrel - Let us know how it works out. Like I said, a very common Savage Mark II issue. I've owned 5 various types, currently have an FV-SR and an FVT. Great shooters, but crappy mags and common extraction problems.

The ammo is really key. If you shoot SK, Norma, or other greasy-lube ammo, you'll probably never have an issue. CCI SV is one of the worst for this....but it's also cheap and Savages seem to shoot it really well.

Some guys at my range actually spend time shaving the waxy lube off of CCI SV before shooting. Sounds like too much fun!

Just a thought, you might take an old toothbrush and cut a small bit of it to epoxy onto a dowel, to reach into that relief area. You could then brush it out with Boretech C4 after each outing. C4 cuts most carbon very easily, also great in the chamber to remove Carbon Ring deposits (everyone gets 'em) - just a wet patch for 1-5 min then nylon brush in the chamber.
If you 'never' had this prob, maybe the extractor needs 'sharpening' too. OR it could be carbon build-up in the chamber causing the cases to stick ?
 
Every Savage Mk2 I have owned had had this issue. Very accurate and good guns, but I wish they would take the bolt and redesign it. The spring clip is a horrible design. I have ended up adding two clips to all of mine and that mostly ends the issue with regular cleanings.
