So, I've finally picked myself up a Savage model 93 FVSS in 22wmr, now I need a scope for it. I intend to use this rifle in competitions at my local range and to pick the heads off of grouse and pheasant from approx 50-150 yards when I go camping. Can anyone with experience reccomend a moderately priced scope well suited to these tasks. My price range is $150-$300. Thanks

wholesale has 30% off selected scopes right now, my local store had some good models

I had the same 50-150 yard goal as yourself, put a burris c4 on mine and very happy with it

Can't recommend a scope in that price range but I do recommend that whatever scope you choose that it be as much power as you can afford. I too have a FVSS in 22wmr. I have a Vortex Viper 4x16x50 on it. It is great but I think it's $600 is steep for what you want.

I have a Bushnell Banner 6-24 on my 93, it is an inexpensive scope, about $150, but it works quite well. I use the same scope on my 223 and have no issues shooting out to 200 yards with it.

Congrats on the new rifle! If you can hit a grouse's noggin at over 50 yards with anything other than a 17M2 or 17HMR, you're a much better shot than me! :)

As for scopes~depends a bit on what your expectations are. In that price range (in my experience) I'd be looking for an older Bushnell Banner (made in Japan) with an adjustable objective. =AO. Being a rimfire, AO or side focus is important. Bass Pro have an "Occulus" brand you might want to take a look at. Hawke scopes are well loved by lots of people, and there is a reputable Hawke dealer in BC called D&L Airgun. The Hawke Varmint scopes have side focus, a nice feature you rarely find on entry-level scopes.

Thanks for the input gentlemen, after reading your comments I went into my local Wholesale Sports to do a little window shopping. The Vortex PST 4-12x40 for 299.99 is what I'm leaning towards. At a glance it seemed to be the best bang for the buck, the most magnifacation in a well know brand that fell in my price range. Anybody out there care to share their experience with vortex products? I'd be particularly interested in hearing about peoples dealings with Vortex warranty/customer service department. Thanks

For 300 clams plus tax, you may get a much better used scope. Bushnell Elite 5-15 or Trophy 6-18x even a Burris or Redfield. I'd look at the EE first. I hear that if you are not using the Vortex VIPER lineup of scopes, that they are not the best bang for the buck. I am only repeating what I hear OFTEN. I have never even held a Vortex scope in my hands.

I realize I MIGHT be able to get better second hand optics, but the only brand I'd be comfortable purchasing second hand is Leupold because of their ironclad life time warranty. To my knowledge no other manufacturers warranty even comes close to Leupold. And unfortunately even a used Leupold well is out of my price range once you go above 9x magnification. Hence my predicament, do I purchase a lower magnification scope with a lifetime warranty? Or gamble on something else.......

I'd get a rimfire scope, or a scope with an adjustable objective (or side focus). At the moment it's hard to beat the value offered by Vortex scopes.

My son is in outdoor retail... he sells hundreds of scopes and says that Vortex and Leupold are the best bang for the buck and have the best warranties...
