I was out yesterday afternoon picking up some ammo and this bolt action rifle caught my eye.. It's a savage hog hunter in .223, nice looking little rifle and the price point wasn't so bad either. I'm curious if anyone around here has any experience with this rifle and if so what's your take on it? I will say the one thing I'm not fussy on is the internal box magazine, is there a way to change this?

I have this rifle in 223 and love it. I dont mind the blind mag but if you want to change it out you would have to get new bottom metal and a stock. Financially probably not worth it unless you really love everything else about the rifle.

I haven't quite made up my mind yet.. I do like the look and feel of it though. I'm gonna price a new stock with the box mag feed system

Really love those Hog Rifles, I've got three of them; I've got the .223 with a scope for target and small game, an identical model in .308 that I use as my scope deer rifle, and a third in .308 I use with iron sights as my close range brush rifle. One platform, three distinct uses, same familiarity for all three. The balance is good and I like the medium contour barrel for both accuracy and portability. I know some people who don't like the open sights, but I find them great for quick and accurate target acquisition. I don't see a need for a flash hider and silencers are only legal in the states so the threaded barrel is kind of superfluous but it's there if you want the option of a hider or a muzzle break. The blind mag is a bit of a PITA but it's a hunting rifle and not a tactical piece, and the solid stock adds to the accuracy factor in my opinion.

Thanks for the info guys. I really do like the look of it and the price is bang on, I guess I'll make another trip back there and handle it again.. If the blind mag really does get on my nerves then I guess I'll have to look into an aftermarket stock for it

I have a Hog Hunter in .223. I just put a Boyds thumbhole stock on it and am very pleased with it.
This is the first rifle I have had with an internal magazine. Yes, it does take some getting used to.
From what I have read/understand, if you want a factory rifle similar to the Hog Hunter in .223, you could go with a Savage 10 Precision Carbine, but it's almost twice the price.

i have both the precision carbine and the Hog Hunter-i wanted to get back to iron sights so I got the Hog Hunter-both rifles are in .223. The hog is easy to grab out of the truck gun and good for close coyote encounters walking through the coulees etc-the carbine I use for longer range ( up to 400M) target and coyote shooting. Although I really like the carbine-my fav is still the easy wielding Hog-light/dependable/easy to swing and shoot. I wasn't a big fan of the blind mag but once i get used to it for hunting it's just fine-If you can't hit your target the first 6 shots it's already long gone anyways. I might get a boyds stock later this fall for it just for looks-but as a no frills iron sighted rifle it does just fine. I did manage to do a 4" group prone from 100m with the iron sights and will only get better with more practice.

I'm not entirely sure what to do.. I also really like the savage 10 fcp SR.. It's only a couple hundred bucks more and I'd have the ability to change calibers from .223 to .308 and no blind mag to deal with.. I'm not entirely sold on the internal mag and I'm worried I won't come around to it
