Savage in .284

Just got a 99savage in .284. For some reason I just can't settle on a bullet and load. Any good suggestions? I was leaning towards Hornady's BTSP 162gr. I'd like to be able to take deer,black bear or moose should whatever oppurtunity presents itself. Shots could be anywhere from 25 yards to 200 yards. Mostly fairly bushy terrain but some open ground as well. Thoughts?

With the short magazine you would be better off with a quality 140gr as reduced case capacity/bullet seating, plays a role here.I loaded for a buddy with one ,a 99C and it shot 1/2 MOA or better with 49gr/H414 and a Hornady 140gr .Win 760 is the same powder.[OAL 2.80"]..Harold
 
If you have a 2.8" mag length you might be better with the 160gr Speer Hot Core. I had to use it in my Browning BLR 284 Win. It took a number of deer out to 250 yds just fine with 62% average weight retention. When I tried the Hornady bullets they were too far back in the case to get a good grip with the case neck and would sometimes push back into the case in the mag on recoil. I didn't have that problem with the Speers, never did try Noslers in it.
I had good success with the Speer 145gr, 160gr SP, 160gr Mag Tip and the 145gr Grand Slams.
 
My buddy was targeting deer only so the 140's did the deed.The Hornady 162's are long darts.His didn't shoot the 154's worth a $hit.But every gun is different.......Harold

Thanks fellas its all good info. I had also looked at grand slams and am now leaning towards noslers and will probably go to 140 grainers. Good point on the length of those 162 hornadys by the way. Thanks, Paul.

PS: use magnum primers with either of these powders........Harold

I have a nice 99 in 243, and wished it was 284. That will be a marvelous lever gun. I have killed lots of moose with heavy bullets in a military 7x57, and the 284 will just do it farther away. Great purchase.
 
I'm in posession of my Brother-inlaw's 99C in .284, I'm going to work up a 140 grain load for it.

I'm also doing some restorative work on it as the buttstock needs to be replaced and I'd like to reblue it for him.
