I got a Savage M170 with a feeding issue and was hoping there was someone on here who has a bit of experience with these rifles. Its chambered in 30-30 and what happens is shell gets jammed between the lifter and the bolt so then the lifter never actually lifts the shell up to go into the chamber.

Don't think any of these pictures will help since I have the lifter removed but maybe someone can spot something irregular. Thanks in advance for any help and advice.

I just assumed it was normal with mine. The shell doesn't stay in the tube like a shotgun in mine, it peeks out and the lifter is what holds it in.

The rifle doesn't get rave reviews, mine is unreliable, has a bad trigger, and trying to pump it feels more like a mechanical engineering puzzle than like fun.

But mine has a ton of sentimental value so I can't let it go.

I’ve heard it before that these things not working is as normal as a Mini 14 missing it’s target.

Yes this one doesn’t retain the cartridge either and sticks out. If I do manage to get it to feed it will feed two cartridges. The 30-30 shells are also loose in the magazine tube which makes me wonder if the adapter they used to convert theses from .410 to rifle cartridges is the same adapter for both 30-30 and .35.

Mine did it. I almost lost my first deer because of it, and missed a second shot to anchor the biggest black bear I've ever shot (yeah, I made a poor first shot). I traded it off on a Model 94 after, and both parties were happy. Bummer, because if I'd had no trouble with it, it jolly well likely would have been my favourite all time rifle. Very fast to shoot, and I found it to be accurate.
