Savage Mako .17HMR Ejects Shells When Inserting Magazine

Hi folks,

I have a Savage Mako .17HMR. The gun is a riot to shoot and is extremely accurate. However...

If I put 5 shells in the mag and then load it in the gun, it spews all of the ammo out all over the table through the breech. If I hold the magazine release back while I insert it, it works OK. Is this normal or a known problem with these guns?

Hmmm, I have the Mako but in .22lr and mine has never done that.

I have the 22 Mako - never seen that happen...the odd time there will be a bad feed from the mag into the chamber....get another magazine and try it out...the spring may be fu-barred

I had this with a 22LR. The mag was falling apart. where the sides are tacked into the front or the back were loose and the the mag opened up and the feed lips could not hold the bullets in. Except mine would spray 10 bullets out every time. Bought a new mag and was good to go.

My 17 hmr savage does this as well. All I did was give the lips on the top of the mag at the rear a bit of slight bend inward with needle nose pliers...hasn't happened since!
