Had some spare time so I hit the indoor range today to so some testing with my Savage Mako that I purchased in the fall.

I figured out that it loves CCI Blazers for a lead Round Nose. One shot groups at 20 yards. So with gopher season fast approaching here in Saskatchewan I thought I'd find out what it liked for hollow points.

First off, my mind must be playing tricks on my. I could have sworn that I saw one of the little bastards on the way to the range... the itch... the itch is growing.

Anyhow, here are the results from sand bags at 20 yards.

1-The cheap Federal Bulk pack. $25 for 525--- 5 cents a round

2-38 grains instead of 36. $3.50 for 50--- 7 cents a round

3-The expensive stuff. Velocitor is $6.50 for 50--- 13 cents each

4-YellowJackets. $44 for a brick of 500--- 9 cents each

5-Some Winchester. $7 for 100--- 7 cents each

6-Some round nose that I never tried. $3.50 for 50--- 7 cents each

My conclusion. This Mako likes pretty much everything. The only thing that it didn't like was the Winchester RN Target stuff that I tried two weeks ago. I'm happy that it likes the cheap stuff but I like the Hollow Point on the YellowJackets so I think I might use it.

I'm happy with the purchase and now I can't wait to hit the fields in about 8 weeks.

Cheers

before you decide on the yellow jacket you should try them all at 50yards and maybe 100 if you plan on shooting that far. you may notice a huge difference at the further distances between group sizes. some will tend to stay pretty tight while others will open wide up a he further distances.

Mako

I had a Mako and mine wasn't as accurate as your's seems to be. I only tried mine at 50 meters, and I had a lot of trouble getting behind their stock design. Be interesting to see how well your rifle shoots at 50 meters. 20 yards isn't much of a test. FS

That's unfortunatly all I have available right now. This weekend I'm heading to PA and their outdoor range will be much better... all they way to 500m but I don't think I'll stretch its legs that far.

50 and 100 tests are on the way.... but for now it doesn't seem to matter what I feed it. Its all minute of gopher and that brings a smile to my face.

Hey I bought a Mako last month also but mine is in 17HMR. Looks like they shoot equally well in .22! Nice rifle IMO. I have been using the Yellowjackets for the last couple years out of my Marlin 39a and they work awesome on the Columbian Ground Squirrels we have around here, that big hollow cavity really opens them up.

When I bought my Mako, initially I did all of my shooting at 30m. The Winchester superX ammo you are using you should find shoots very well out at 100m. I bedded mine, and I am able to get tiny groups even with bulk ammo, and my best group to date was with CCI standard velocity ammo. For practice you will be amazed how well Winchester Dynapoint bulk ammo shoots, I was totally amazed. Once you get the hang of things, try moving out to 50m and try your luck. I spent alot of time shooting up close before I moved back, as for me this was really the first time I dedicated any time seriously to shooting a rifle, and wanted to work on the fundamentals first. Good luck with your rifle, I hope you continue to enjoy it!
