So ive discovered on the internet its possible to swap the barrel on a savage mark 2 with a ruger 77/22 barrel. i have a basic mark 2 in a thumbhole stock but its the sporter not the heavy barrel.

from rimfirecentral.com
Knocked out the pin holding the barrel and using a wooden dowel and a BFH (big f'ing hammer) drove the original barrel out from the breech end. It was a tight slip fit. Not a press fit. I no longer have my notes, but we moved the shoulder forward, and reduced the shank diameter very slightly on the replacement 10/22 barrel. You need to cut or file another notch in the breech end of the 10/22 barrel for the extractors in the bolt. 77/22 barrels would work better. It went right together with some Locktite for bearing mounting. Need to check your headspace if you do this. Still haven't been to the range to see how it shoots, but it seems to function OK so far.

does anyone know any gunsmiths in southern ontario that are capable of doing this job? i would like to put a heavy barrel on my mark 2 ( its a left handed with the pencil barrel)

Save yourself a LOT of money, time and hassle... sell your pencil barrel rifle and buy a heavy barrel rifle... probably will cost you under $100 going used for used.

i already have a aftermarket stock for my left handed mark 2 and i really dont want to buy the BTVLSS for 500+ $... :S

Use the aftermarket stock for your heavy barrel MKII... a 5/8" wooden dowel, $3 worth of sandpaper and 10 minutes of your time... best of all you can make it fit like a glove.

these are my best groups so far, one with cci standard velocity, and cci green tag, i also used winchester m22 bulk and it was just a tad worse then the cci standard velocity

both targets @ 50 yards benchrest. point of aim was center of the target.

its my first time ever putting in an aftermarket stock, i simply used the existing bottom metal ( thin ####, planning on replacing it with thicker metal) and tightened the action screws really tight. didnt dremel or sand the inside of the stock or bed it. any tips on how i can make this thing more accurate? :)
