Savage Mark 2 BTVS Loading Problem

Hey,

I just got a Savage Mark 2 BTVS and I found that it has a frequent problems when loading the round from the magazine to the bore. The round often doesn't line up correctly and I need to manually line it up in the bore. I also have some casing stay stuck in the bore after firing the rifle?

Could the rim of the magazine be worn and cause this nonalignment? And is the casing stuck in the bore caused because the rifle is fairly new?
 
what kind of ammunition are you using?
22LR is crimped and depending on which brand you're using the crimp alignments will at times bind with the bore entrance walls -- this is common with cheap/value ammo like Remington golden bullets.
 
I am using Winchester 36 grain, 1280FPS, Hollow Point, Copper Plated 22Lr.
The problem also happened with Federal, American Eagle and CCI Stinger ammunition.

Bent or damaged magazine. Try using another one.

Working bolt too slow.

Bent magazine guide. There is a piece of flat metal hanging down from the back of the magazine opening. If this is bent the cartridge will not be in proper alignment, either horizontally or vertically.

Your extraction problem might be in the extractors themselves. If someone has taken the bolt apart, and switched them, there will be extraction problems.

While they look the same, the RIGHT extractor has a definite pointed hook on it, while the LEFT extractor is rounded more at the point. Also, a bent "C" spring that holds the extractors in position will cause problems by making the extractors too loose.

If you take the extractors out of the bolt, take a stone or file and LIGHTLY stroke the SIDES of them to polish the burrs left by manufacturing. Do the same with the firing pin too, so that they move freely in their slots.

Did I forget to mention that my magazine has some side to side play and a bit of up and down play.
 
My MKIIF had extraction problems when I received it Bought it slightly used off the EE.

All it needed was a thorough cleaning of the breech face including the two grooves/notches/reliefs for the extractor claws. The bolt face and the extractor needs to be cleaned as well. If you are careful not to over bend it, you can remove the C-clip that holds the extractor, then the extractor, for a more thorough bolt face cleaning. You may need to soak these parts in Hoppes 9 before brushing/picking.

Your feeding problems could be caused by a magazine that is too loose in the well. Change the mag (I doubt this will help) or squeeze in the mag well sides ever so slightly.
 
I just got a new 10 round magazine for it and just like easyrider604 said, it didn't solve my problem.

When you refer to the ''mag well sides'' do you mean the two metal pieces that stick out the back of the magazine and slide in the two notches in the magazine entry of the gun?
 
I have had 4 and I had terrible grouping when i used the 10 shot mag. Is your rifle new? If it is, i would be taking it back to the store. Al of mine were near perfect with the ammo feeding. I only had a little trouble with the 333 bulk pack and the winchester xpert bulk.

The mag well is that rectangular shaped part of the rifle you can see, at the bottom where you insert the magazine. One end of the mag well holds the spring clip that holds/releases the magazine.

I have seen a mag well that was quite loose, and I've seen one (on my MKIIF) that just allows the magazine to slip in, and drop out, with very little play.

Slide in your magazines and lock in place. You should see very little left/right play. Fore and aft play should also be minimal and actually kept tight by the mag lock.

If too much left/right play, remove the stock and squeeze the sides of the well very slightly. Try the magazine fit with each tiny squeeze. Squeezing is easy, expanding will be a little more challenge, so be patient and don't over squeeze. Magazine should slide in and lock smoothly, and drop smoothly when released, with no binding.

When operating the bolt, push it forward fairly fast, with a smooth continuous and deliberate motion...do not hesitate.
