I plan on buying a Savage mark 2 FV and putting a nikon pro staff 3-9x40 scope on it. Can anyone advise me on what I need to buy to mount it. Does the type of barrel require a certain set of ring . Anything else I might need ie base etc.

thanks.

The bases I typically use is a Weaver #16. I also used Weaver Quad Lock "high" rings when I mounted a 3-9x40 Weaver Kaspa on a Mark 2 I bought for the girlfriend. I removed the adjustment blade from the rear sight to get enough clearance on hers, but the FV doesn't have a rear sight so you should be good to go.

I have a Mk2 BV with a 4x32 scope on it with medium rings.

I tried my 3-9x40 prostaff on it with high rings and didn't like it. (was too high) If I remember correctly it was also a close fit with the barrel. (fit test it before buying if you can)
A 2-7x32 Prostaff would work better. IMO
It would sit lower and 7x is plenty for a .22.

You'll like your Mk2 :)

There will be factory bases on the gun when you get it... They are serviceable, but if you decide to use them, remove the screws and add a drop of blue (weak) Loc-Tite before reinstalling. Try to pick up a DIP base if you can or the EGW, but I prefer the DIP products... Wouldn't hurt to shoot it for awhile first... You will likely hate the stock and bottom metal, in which case a Boyd's is in order and you will need a trigger guard and bottom metal then also (plus longer action screws)...

"High" quad lock rings on factory bases will usually fit up to a 40/42 scope, but not some of the larger 44-50 scopes.

I have a 42 scope sitting in Quad Lock rings on my model G.

I have a MK2 TR which came with two picatinny-style mounts upon which I tried several different rings to mount my Nikon Pro staff Target EFR 3-9x 40mm. I ended up going with high Burris Zee rings in order to get the necessary clearance for the scope since the 40mm adjustable objective is bigger on this scope than most other 40mm scopes without AO. I do wish I could have got away with lower rings since I'm now trying to figure out how to cleanly build up my cheek rest so I can comfortably shoot this thing. It's not bad from prone position, but could be better. Anyone know of a good cheek pad/rest for a decent price?

Moral of my story - take your gun and scope with you to your LGS if possible and test fit rings before buying. I ended up buying three sets of rings before I got some that worked using trial and error method. Fortunately I was able to return the other two sets.
