hey guys just bought my first .22 rifle!! I originally had gone with the Ruger Target model after a long time trying to decide between the two. I got home (two hour drive) then decided i wanted the Savage instead..lol

Drove back down exchanged the Ruger for the Savage. I ended up going with the .22 Magnum rather than the .22lr. When i bought the Ruger initially the sales guy never mentioned they had the Savage in .22WMR... just said were sold out of .17 version.

anyway u guys think i made the right pick?? .22WMR over .22lr in the Savage or should I have stuck with the Ruger??

both same price $499

Eh, Bolt or semi, it's personal preference. Both models are very popular, and I think either are a good choice. Just up to what action you prefer.

.22 WMR is sweet. Much more expensive than .22lr though. My opinion is; if you're plan is to hunt small game/varmints you made a great choice. If its more for shooting paper and plinking, I would have stayed with the .22lr in either model. But that is just my opinion.

I'm looking for a new gopher gun, and I think I'm going to go with either the Mark II BTVS or the Cz 452 in .17HMR or .22WMR....

If this is your first 22 rifle then may I just say that your choice matter very little. It is "first" 22 rifle, by definition there will be second, third.. etc. Or why would you call it first in first place. Savage MkII is always a good choice BTW, with the right ammo you'll be picking golf balls at 100 yards.

made in Canada... makes it a little sweeter. i love savages, WMR is for sure more expensive but still relatively cheap compared to most other calibers so enjoy it. but if i were you my next gun would be a .22lr simply because you will be surprised how quick you can burn through several hundred rounds in one sitting. .22lr makes for nice filler while playing with the big boys.

I bought 4 different types of ammo today..

Remington Premier-33gr Accutip-V
CCI-Maxi-Mag HP+V 30gr
CCI-Maxi-Mag HP 40 gr
CCI-22 Mag V-Max 30gr

anyone have experience with any of these?

I tried Maxi-Mag and MAxi-Mag+V. Maxi-MAg+V is very inaccurate, garbage basically. I later on learnt that it has been long known that 22 size bullets lighter than 37gr are hard to stabilize or at least need different twist rate to fly straight.

ammunition grain and what to use is difficult to understand for someone just getting into firearms...thought I would just buy a few different brands. I also just picked up a box of Hornady 30gr V-max as well..lol

so its best to stay away ammo under 40gr??

I would try different ammo and bullet weights till you find out which shoots the tightest groups. That will be the one your rifle likes the best. You can have 2 of the same model of rifle, put same ammo through them and both will group differently. Sometimes it may not be noticeably different, but, it will be different.
