I had been looking for a 22LR for a while, interested in shooting paper and possibly grouse/rabbits (I have a Browning SA22 that is a good hunter and would also like to find a Browning Buck Mark Rifle for hunting).

I wanted a bolt action repeater that could be capable of decent groups on the bench. That led me to look at the Ruger 77/22, Browning T-Bolt and the Winchester Wildcat (TOZ), I had not initially considered a Savage. During my 'research' (mostly here and RFC) I was convinced that the Savage was worth a look, and the BTVS looked interesting as a stock choice. After holding one I was convinced that the thumbhole design was very functional and the gun as a package seemed like a decent purchase. I was also quite surprised at the color out of the box, I was expecting a much lighter stock.

It's now equipped with a Tasco 4-16x40mm with a Vital Zone Reticle, a bipod has been ordered. I'm real happy with it so far, the only thing that really bothered me was how stiff/rough the safety was but that was easily cured by tensioning and bending the spring which allowed a smoother disengagement which is still firm enough to be safe. The Accutrigger seems nice as well, still a bit heavy at it's lowest adjustment but there is room for improvement with a bit of tinkering.

So far I have tried Winchester Dynapoint, Winchester Wildcat, Winchester 333, Winchester Power Point HP and Lapua Standard Plus. The best groupings at 25 yards seem to be the 333's, more testing is required...

lol I just got my 93 btvs in the mail today ! I noticed that the bolt on mine was a little tough to cycle. It was made in Canada as well. I was surprised LOL

I have this in the .17 HMR. It is one of my favourite guns. I have the same stock on a .223 stainless BVTSS and find it one of the most comfortable shooting stocks there is.

I've read that the CCI mini mag works well out of these guns.

I'm in a much similar situation as you were in, just looking for a decent 22 bolt action. I noticed that you didn't mention the CZ in your list for consideration, just wondering how you avoided getting the CZ bug, especially considering where you did your research?

I lied, the CZ was on my list, actually near the top for a while. If I chose a CZ I was undecided between the American, Lux, Ultra Lux and Trainer. I liked the idea of sights but past 25 yards it's hard for me to see a target and I liked the 'clean' look of the American. I had an opportunity to shoot a CZ Classic (American), and while it shot well I did not like action, it just seemed like there was much room left for improvement, that's what stood out when I tried it. The more I looked at the CZ's, the more I disliked the stamped trigger guard, although I knew that function wise it would not matter (although I wondered how many other parts were 'cheapened' to keep the price low). I was able to handle the Savage before I bought it, and the CZ would have to be ordered, that also weighed in my decision.

I suspect I will have a CZ some day, probably the American, although I still like the Euro stocks on the Lux.

Good luck in your decision, now I understand why people have more than one rimfire ;)

casterpollox I really like the look of the Mako, hoping to get a chance to try one, guessing the comfort is close to the BTVS?

I have exactly the same model. Despite backing off the trigger spring, it wasn't light enough for me. I ended up removing the Savage factory spring and sourcing a new lighter spring. I've got the pull down to just over a pound. Because I'm using an aftermarket spring, it doesn't have a spring seat nor the tapered end that screws down. Thus I had to insert a machine screw into the hole to keep it nicely in place. Works exceptionally well.

Houndog did you buy this in canada as I am looking for Savage Mark II BSEV.Checked few places but could not find one.
Thanks.

I agree about the .17hmr. Hate to say it, that when I can afford to shoot it, it gets chosen 100% of the time over my .22 I will be hard pressed to buy another rifle (that isn't and black one) that doesn't have a thumbhole stock.

To the OP. Very nice rifle. I love the wood in the stock. My safety broke in just by clicking it on and off. Its no where near as hard as it was when i first bought it.

I have both the MKII and the 93 R both in FV (black tupperware and heavy barrel) Both are Blued on Black.

I bought the 93R as a gopher gun and I love the fact that I can shoot circles around all my buddies when out in the patch..... The only down side .... It cost a bunch more than a .22 to shoot. So that is when I bought the MKII, but I got exactly that same config so praticing at the range is a blast with out worring about the cost of ammo!

Cheers!

i noticed some burrs on my bolt from machining. i took a fine file, and filed a few of the faces on the bolt smooth and more square. this seemed to help so much i did it to my 700 bolt as well.

Got the same one in .22LR as most everyone else here seems to have. Mine was stiff out of the box but after many hundreds of rounds it is very smooth now. Best target ammo is probably CCI Blazer of all things. My gun really likes this ammo and shoots some very good groups, like 1 ragged hole at 25 yards. For gopher shooting, which is the whole reason for this rifle, I like the Winchester power points and the Federal bulk pack hollow point. This is not the first .22 I have owned that loved the Federal bulk pack. BTW, I have tried a whole bunch of different ammo in my rifle at the range and this is what works best for me.

hows the Federal 22lr 36 Grain Copper Plated Hollow Point run in it? i put some of the regular 40 grain through it today. some 5 shot groups were 1/2" at 50, others opened up quite a bit. it could be me, but there were a lot of shots i felt should have landed elsewhere. like i would put 4 shots in a connecting hole, and then the last shot would be on inch or 2 away. again, that could just be me. using a good optic, can clearly see target/holes.
