What do you guys think about the Savage MKII F/FV for a small game/decent bench rifle?

I figure the synthetic stock is nice for the field, i don't want to worry about dinging up a wood one, and it leaves me the option to make a nice laminate one later on for it . The accutrigger seems like another nice feature.

As for weight, i'm not really concerned with a 6lb gun in the field (FV version), but will the bull barrel really provide that much more accuracy? Anyone had experience with Standard vs Bull @ 100m from a bench? I know each rifle will perform a bit differently.. but i'm curious.

This will also be my first .22lr!

Thanks

I took mine out this year for hunting just because it was the only .22 I had on me at the time. It seemed heavier than my Savage 12FVSS .308. Maybe it was just the couple of days that did it. Or maybe subconsciously I was thinking "I am carrying a .22 this should be half the weight." That was without a sling though.

That being said. I love mine. I can't believe the steal I got mine for. Can't beat it for $100. Super accurate and not too bad looking either.

I have had a MKII FV for 3 years now. It is my main small game getter. I also use it as a trainer for my 308 longrange shooting. The stock sucks quite a bit though. I had to build a cheek riser just to be able to shoot it. The barrel and action are great, although I did have to do alot of stoning and polishing to get it just the way I like it. It now has a very crisp 2lb trigger. I think it's a great gun for both hunting and bench work. I can sit at the bench all day shooting for groups. Mine loves Eley ammo and can easily hold under 1/2" 5shot groups @50yds. It has really helped my centerfire shooting. I use it for field prone shooting, dialing for range and wind practice. Lastly, come fall, I use it for small game. It's quite fun to take small critters with head shots out to 100+ yds, IF the wind is playing nice. I have said I would never get rid of it but now the new MKII's are coming out with the same style stock as my 308, so another purchase may be happening soon.

I really do like the looks of the newer models! That said if i get the FV i can make what ever kind of stock i want for it, its really the action and the barrel that matter. I think the heavy barrel might be nicer for off hand shots too. I have heard the open sights are junk and i like how it looks without them!
