Hi everyone,
:)

I've been thinking of ordering a bolt action rimfire for quite some time and I've decided that the Savage Mark II-FV with the heavy target barrell and accutrigger seems like it would have a great bang for the buck. Do you guys who already own one of these rifles recommend it? I would love to hear if this would be a good purchase.

Also, I've mostly just assumed that I would be getting a .22lr, however the .17hmr seems kind of attractive and seeing as this is a bolt action, I don't think I would be breaking the bank too badly trying to feed this puppy. Any thoughts on the caliber?

Thanks in advance for your advice.

I have that exact rifle you are considering. I formerly owned the MarkII LV with a greay laminate stock. I regretted selling it, so I purchesed the FV model a year later. Mine has no accu-trigger, but a shim job later and its creep free and at a decent 2.5 lbs.

These rifles are a good bargain. I have owned and shot better, but for the price, you get what you pay for. Savage is great with customer service, from my experience. I was having problems with failure to extract. Not every time, but often enough. They sent me a new L-clip to go on the end of the bolt. That fixed the problem. For some reason though, It still fails to extract winchester power points.

Accuracy is around the 3/4 inch mark pretty consistantly at 50 yards. Nothing stellar. On good days with match ammo it can hover in the high 5xxs. The only thing I really didn't care for is the stock. It feels small and thin in the wrist area. I painted mine as shown in the photos. I used a textured black/granite colour. I filled the buttstock with expandable foam so it doesn't sound like a hollow piece of plastic now. I bedded the action and heavier part of the barrel where it steps down. It made things a bit more consistant.

Fun gun to shoot. And if you're a tinkerer at all, they can be made to shoot very well. There's a few aftermarket goodies available. Check Savageshooters, or sharpshootersupplies. Lots of stuff available.

Good luck with your purchase.

Great guns (awesome Accutrigger) for bargain basement prices...what more could you ask for? :) I've liked all of my Savages so far. I've always appreciated their decent selection of lefty guns...makes us Southpaws feel appreciated. :D

Yes and YES! Great rifle for the price. My only complaint with that model is that the stock is a tad light....I prefer a little more heft, but that's just me. Great value for price, accurate as all heck. We use them, and BV and BVTS models in our Juniors training program.

Sweet! Thanks for the posts guys, and thanks for sharing the pictures Barks, thats a nice rifle for sure. Now my only decision will be caliber, I'm pretty sure the .17 HMR caliber goes by a different name...

I filled stock on mine with epoxy and molded in screw-in ballast rod. When I take it to the bush I open stock butt and pull out the ballast. Thats one up for synthetic stocks :p

I've had a non-Accutrigger BV in the pepper laminate for a few years now. I was waiting for a Accutrigger model to come out and Ron Coburg (Savage Prez.) said they'd never come out with a rimfire version because of the cost. So, I decded to end my wait and buy one. Of course, they introduced one the following year...:(

I've been doing lots of .22 accuracy testing at 50 yds. and I've bought every cartridge offered at Canadian Tire and Wallmart. Like previous posters have mentioned, accuracy is nothing to write home about, with bulk loads averaging 1.5"-2" (10 shot groups) and others falling @ 1" mark.

I've recently tested (2) different rounds that are showing great accuracy potential. They are Federal .22 cal 38 gr. & 40 gr. hollowpoints (High velocity) - #712 & #710 respectively. The 38 gr. Federals have a slight upperhand over the 40 gr. So far, (1) flier out of the (10) shot group has opened up the group but the other (9) are easily into the .5"-.6" range at 50 yds.

If you buy one, try these first. It could save you a lot of money, time and effort.

I've been trying CCI's standard velocity RN on my MK II GL after reading an article on Guns & Ammo raving on how sub-sonic rounds are deadly accurate because the bullet doesn't get buffeted as they don't break the sound barrier.

Well...I think my rifle doesn't shoot very well with these rounds, and I'm going to try some high velocity and see how that goes. Might try the Federals that you mentioned. Thanks.

I just ordered the 93R17-FV!!! Same rifle as the MarkII-FV but in .17HMR. After Tax and shipping it will be about $330, not bad for a heavy-barrelled supposedly tac driving machine. I'm really excited for the new caliber too, I've never owned a .17HMR...
Looks like I'll be hunting for a new scope and bipod for xmas eh?
