Hi, I was teaching my daughter how to shoot a .22 yesterday and used the Savage Mark II.

I don't remembering having these problems with the magazine years ago when I used it. I don't know if the magazine is the problem or the ammo (I doubt it's the ammo as we tried 4 different kinds).

So this is a Savage OEM magazine that came with the gun that I bought in 2007 or so.

Yesterday, after the first few rounds that were ok, the rest of them had feeding issues - I can see with the bolt open that the rounds are kind of facing sideways to downwards, not the upwards orientation it should be. We ended up manually feeding the rest of the rounds one by one and ditching the magazine.

I got home and took a look quickly at reports of magazine problems and there appears to be more than a few reports of this.

Given the magazine is older, I am not sure whether magazines can go bad or not.

The bigger question I have is what should I get to replace it. I see three options from the various LGS. These are all Savage so I am not sure if there are any aftermarket mags. But between these three, do you have any feedback on whether one works better than another?

1. Savage Lakefield MK II & 900 Series .22lr 5rd Magazine

2. Savage 90008 MK II Series 22 LR Steel Stainless Finish Magazine-10 Round

3. SAVAGE ARMS MARK II SERIES MAGAZINE - .22LR, 10 ROUNDS [20005]

Thanks in advance for your feedback and input.

My savage mags act up when stuff starts gunking them up. Sometimes a large granule will prevent the follower from moving freely.

Last spring I had bought a very used Lakefield II for my boy.

I ran some exceptionally waxy CCI minimag through it on its first use.
That waxy ammo may have ended what little life the OEM mag had left.
I looked (not too hard) for Lakefield II replacement mags and could not find any.

Threw that ammo away as it was also gumming up my chamber and wouldn't extract.
I use the CCI red and green powder coated stuff now. No mess !

Next trip out decided to pick up a couple Savage II 10 round mags from Cabela's. Don't know the model # (they are steel with red followers).

We were at the range just yesterday, and its seems that the one mag works perfectly.
The other mag will sporadically empty itself.
One second its full and sitting on a table, then it will jettison all 10 rounds (on its own) on to the floor.

Lakefield/Savage are the same mags. 10 rounders are often regarded as more reliable than 5 rounders. The design hasn't changed irrespective of markings (Lakefield or Savage).

Some people even prefer the Lakefield/Savage mags and modify them for Anschütz rifles (overall body is practically the same, only minor file work required).

I have multiple 10 round magazines for my FV-SR and they have worked completely fine over the last few thousand rounds... bullseye north has them in stock.

I am checking Bullseye North - which one do you have? The stainless steel 10 rounder or the black 10 rounder?

Thanks for the suggestions. I picked up 2 x stainless steel OEM 10-round Savage magazines. Made in Canada so happy to support local industry. The SS magazines even by fondling (sorry, can't think of a better term) and manipulating them - they definitely seem much better made than the OEM one from 15 years or so ago (the metal doesn't seem to give when I press down on it). It is a bit of a contrast with the rest of the stock wood and metal rifle. Will get a chance to try this perhaps this coming weekend with some new Eley rounds I bought (also based on a CGN community recommendation).

I’m glad you found some nice magazines. I have quite a few newer production ones and they all work perfectly. FYI, the magazine is nickle plated rather than stainless. Small detail. I find the current production black magazines to be just as reliable if you want to save a buck or two in the future.

Very interesting. I just looked at the packaging and it said stainless steel. Is the actual item not as advertised?

Here's what I bought (actual photo I just took now).

I just looked at the vendor website where I bought the item.

https://www.gotenda.com/product/sav...-lr-steel-stainless-finish-magazine-10-round/

Interesting that the packaging that I am looking at says stainless steel, but the advertising of the item at the store says "stainless steel finish". So I think you are right - good catch.

I just hope it is an improvement over the OEM one that came with the gun.

If you want true aftermarket magazines, spend $50 a magazine importing some US made ones. Csspecs

https://stores.csspecs.com/savage-mk-ii/

stocks 10 round and 20 round aftermarket savage mk2 magazines.

They don't do direct to Canada I believe, so you'll most likely have to 3rd party it across.

OK thanks. Good to know because I have not found any in Canada and it appears as if this is by design.

Will look into this. I used iRunguns recently to import some stuff, so will see if they can get these for me. Thanks for the heads up on these. It is good to know one is not captive to just the OEM mag type.

Yeah that’s marketing for you! I have some or the same item. I think they mean it’s the magazine meant to go with their stainless steel rifles. I believe strongly that it’s Nickle plated but who knows, I’ve been wrong before. As I said, it’s a minor detail. I’ve had success with current production back and silver mags so if you stumble upon some 10 rounders in black and want to save $10ish I say have at er!

I may buy the black ones as well...they don't look to be the exact same thing as the one that came with the gun, so hopefully improvements over the years.

On a completely different and humorous side note, I just realized what your avatar actually is. For the longest time it l thought it was a chipmunk's head or something...just realized it was not that this morning when I looked closer...the aging process has not been kind to me...lol

I’ve had to squeeze the sides together on the 5 and 10 round mags and then stake the little tabs that hold the mag together with a center punch. That fixed the problem of spitting out all the rounds for no reason
