so i tried looking here for any info on the exact model and didn't see much. i'm new to firearms, (passed the testing, but need to send in all my info) and am looking for a first time rifle.

i want .22 for cost reasons and to get down my shooting techniques first.

link to the model,
ht tp://www.frontierfirearms.ca/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=17_19_78_337&products_id=3977

from what i have read so far it seems to be a really great gun and well worth the money.

any other rifles i should consider with the following conditions,
Budget - $200-$400, must be bolt action, ideally with a 5 shot mag.

also what scope would you recommend for indoor/outdoor ranges from 50 yards to 100?

thanks for the help guys.

Basic feeling here is that it is very accurate, ugly, cheap, and still not OVERALL as good as the CZ, Anchutz, 40x and all the customs done (except tacticals).

I really like my mk2 fv but I dont think I would pay that kinda money for one
mine was around 245 otd iirc 2 years ago though

i love my mk2-f shoots great. my only two complaints is the stock and the finish. it will eat the #### out of a box of federal 525 packs. it eats them all and spits them out the other end straight as a laser. well, not really but you know what i mean lol

I have the Mark II "G" model fur hunting! Extremely accurate firearm and will eat anything although the crappier ammo has a tendency to foul the extractor (granted this was over 1000 rounds as a test).

Open sights from the box I was easily shooting pencils at 25 yards.

I've made these shots with scopes at 50 yards:

this was 50 yards, no bench rest, just leaning on the car, moderate wind (the one off by itself was scope problems):

My Mark II FV is a great shooter. It likes CCI Target ammo and Wolf Target ammo and will put them in the same hole if I do my part. 50 yards isn't that far. A Bushnell scope 3-9x32 scope would be good enough.

The Mark II stock is kind of small. I think it is a borderline youth stock. I just stuck a recoil pad and some spacers on the end ('cause I had them lying around) but you can upgrade the stock or get the BV series with a wood stock which I think is bigger.

Yeah good ammo can really make a difference. I've always just used the cheapest .22 ammo on the shelf since I mostly hunt and Im a cheap bastard anyways :D

Mine is a BV with a bushnell banner 4-12x40 on top. Nice gun for the money. Only problems I have had with mine with sometimes failure to feed with the 10 round mag. 5 rounders are no problems at all.

thanks guys, i really like the look of it over the wood stock versions. i won't have my licence for a while anyway, just doing some browsing before hand. i will likely stick with this for now.

If you don't mind having iron sights then look into the Stevens 300 .22's, they are the same as the Savage Mark II "F" (same receiver) and can be ordered from Cabelas for $189.99 plus taxes and shipping.

My Mark II continues to amaze me. I don't have any pics of targets laying around but that thing is a laser out to 100yds plus. Shoots best with the 525 value packs too. I tried everything else I could try and it still likes the cheap ones.
I did find the stock way to small though (like a youth stock) but I have a boyds in the mail to replace it soon.
It's more fun than it should be for a rifle I bought to shoot while the big rifles were cooling off at the range.
I have had feeding problems with it though using 5 and 10 rd mags. I think it's a bottom metal problem though and nothing serious. I just have to get around to fixing it some day.

How worn in are the mags and what ammo do you generally use? Both will contribute to feeder problems. For me once my gun and mags were broken in the feeding problem dropped off 50%. When a friend have me a box of CCI I never had a single feeding problem compared to the cheap Winchester Xpert Hollow Points that I have thousands of.

Also try pushing slightly up on the mag and see if that solves your problem, I've heard some people state this was their problem.

I have the FV and it's a great .22. The stock is small, and profiled for using iron sights (same stock as on the F or G, so-equipped), so it's difficult (in my case impossible) to get a good cheek weld on the stock when using a scope. Shoots like a laser though. Very good value for a ~$200.00 .22.

Pushing up on the mags solves the problem 100%. That's why I say it's a bottom metal problem. Just not holding the mag up tight. I should get around to fixing it one of these days.
As for the ammo, I would say that generally it's the lead bullets that are to soft that catch. The copper washed projectiles seem to slide in better. No difference between HPs or RNs.

good to hear as i think i would buy lots of the federal copper HP ones the most.

as for different ammo effecting firearms differently, is that each firearm will be different within the same model?

Each firearm (even the exact same make and models) might have their own brand that performs better than another. When you first get a .22 your buy small 50 round boxes of different brands and try each brand out to see what the best is. Once you figure that out your start buying bricks :D

I had ejection problems with my mark II FS but they sent me a new extractor and ejector when I called the problem in (directly to Savage in the US). Now it's fine.

I had problems too but that was because I ran thousands of rounds of the crapiest/cheapest ammo through it without cleaning the bolt :D

Also no accu-trigger and a sporter barrel.
