Hi everyone,

I’ve had a Savage Mk 2 .22 LR for two months now and would like to improve the look of the bolt by polishing the raw metal parts.

Is this metal actually unfinished? Or is there a coating on it I don’t want to wear off? Here is a picture of the top of the Bolt, it has looked like this since I got it. Would I use a super fine sandpaper? Any recommendations appreciated :)

Thank you very much for this advice, I don't have any power tools and will be doing this by hand. I saw Larry Potterfield with Midway USA do this with sandpaper, but I agree, I don't think it's the best to avoid deep scratches. I will start with fine steel wool and maybe there is a kind of cloth I can use to polish. I'd really like to avoid disassembling the entire bolt!

Polishing a Mark II bolt (both externally and internally) will not only make a cosmetic difference but function will be much smoother also.
I've done two of my own & I would suggest that if possible, you dis-assemble the bolt so that you can clean out any debris that may collect during the polishing process!
Be careful not to remove metal from the base of the bolt handle as these rifles headspace off that part of the bolt.
I've done many bolts over the years with 2000 grit wet and dry and kerosene and never had an issue with scratching the surface - Just don't get over zealous with your polishing efforts!
