Savage Mk.II Barrel Removal Question

I have an older pre-accutrigger Mk.II that I want to remove the barrel from the receiver. I have knocked out the roll pin and used a dowel to attempt to drive the barrel out with. Even with bracing the receiver against the jaws of a vise and using a 3lb hammer it won't move.

I have read threads on Rimfire Central where people commented on this not being that hard, so what am I missing? The next step will be to press it out, but I can't get to that immediately and would really like to have the barrel out before then.

Has anyone done this before that can offer some experience and/or advice?

Thanks,
Mark

What I had to do to get a 10/22 barrel out at some point, supposed to be easy peasy.. yeah right. Might work for you.

Put the barrel/receiver in the freezer for a couple hours.

Then use a heat gun on the receiver to heat it up and it will loosen it's death grip on the barrel.

Do NOT use a torch or some other extreme heat source, you could warp the receiver.

I will give this a try. I had seriously considered using a small propane torch for heat (the propane is not hot enough to affect steel properties), but it will pooch the bluing no matter how gently it is done.

I actually just finished this very project, and ran into the same problem. Assuming you don't have the heavy barrel version to begin with here is what worked for me. I took a small piece of 1/2 aluminum plate, don't need much maybe 2''x3''. Drill a hole slightly larger than the barrel. Put the plate over your vice, slide barrel through and punch the barrel out.

Depending how your vice is mounted this may not work for you. But it worked like a charm here, the aluminum kept the receiver in nice condition and the barrel came out with two or three good hits.

I tried the freezer/heat method and got the barrel to move about 0.020". That is the best shot I have at the moment, the next attempt will be using a press to do it without beating the crap out of it any more than I already have.

Thanks for the help, guys.
