Savage MK II bolt wear - like literally a hole!

I have a Savage MK II bolt action with around 1600 rounds through it. Cleaned and lubed after every use.

Today I noticed the bolt has wear in it to the point there's actually 2 holes in the metal! It doesn't seem to be interfering with the operation of the bolt but this is obviously something I don't want to ignore or mess with.

Is this normal wear or have I done something wrong?

Contact Savage for their opinion. It could be they are on the edge of making a recall notice, or the problem might be one they are aware of and are providing a fix.

Had a similar bolt on a jw-14. Hole was from the bolt knob hole being drilled a hair too close to the front of the bolt. I don't think that's wear.

I think I'll contact savage about this. I could also contact the dealer I bought it from but the shop is about an hour away from me so that sucks.

Yeah I think I will. I just dug out the receipt for it. I didn't realize I've only had it for 5 weeks. I've spent so much time on the range that it seems like much longer.
I also saw on Savage's site that they have a 1 year warranty. I'll see how this goes.

I haven't checked my .22 mag bolt but I do remember the few .22lr's that I did own also had this hole. Perfectly normal.

Would you say it's normal for the amount of usage it's been through? Approximately 1600 rounds. Always cleaned and oiled.

In any event, I've sent a message and the pictures to Savage via their web portal.

I was kind of hoping for a, "meh, that normal don't worry about it!" response from here but I guess it doesn't hurt to send them a message - unless I have to send it in.

Then I'll have nothing to shoot with.

Then I guess I'll have to buy something else to pass the time.:shotgun:

Ok, so I checked my .22 mag and it has two holes in it. I did not buy this new so I cannot confirm exactly how many rounds it has fired but it doesn't appear to be a whole lot. Again these holes are normal. They come that way from the factory. I would bet on it.

Thanks for the replies legi0n and ff33.
This is reassuring. Can't cut into my range time!
It's hard enough to get out as it is.
In any event, I'll see what Savage says.

Since the feeling now is that this is normal, I'll keep using the rifle as I haven't noticed and performance issues.

I was heartbroken when I saw it today thinking about how long it would be at a Smith's shop!

Thanks for taking the time to reply MrSharp.
As I've said, since the overall feeling here is that it's normal, I'll continue to use it and monitor the bolt while awaiting a reply from Savage.

Yes, two machined features intersecting; in your photo, there is no visible wear near those openings.

My bolt has the same hole, and it's practically new. It looks like a small error in the cnc operation. I wouldn't worry about it.
