I would be shocked if this hadn't been asked before, but the search function didn't turn up squat. Would a Savage Mk1 bolt work in a Lakefield Mk1? As far as I can tell, they are the same rifle and the share a ton of other parts. The bolt from my Savage Mk2 is the right diameter, but too long, so I'm sorta confident a Mk1 bolt would work, but I don't want to spend money without confirming. If anyone has both rifles, could you try swapping bolts? Does anyone know for sure if it works or doesn't? Savage support refuses to comment on anything made before 1995, so they aren't any help.

It probably depends - The Lakefield/Savage bolt-action has been through a few re-designs (I suspect the new B-series is a continuation of that line).

Here are my bolts from a:

Lakefield 91T (single-shot Olympic-style target configuration)
Lakefield Mark II
Savage Mark II (modern, E-receiver)

As you can see, even the two Lakefields have some differences in dimensions and cocking pieces.

My understanding is that at some point, Savage moved to using the same sized receiver/bolt length for both magnum (.22 WMR/.17 HMR) and .22/.17 HM2 - the 'E' receivers. At some point, Savage also added a second recoil lug/stock mounting screw to the design.

Given how few Mk. Is are produced compared to Mk. IIs, I would expect your Mk. I to use the same bolt as a Mk. II of the same vintage.

Could you measure from the bolt face to the handle on the Lakefield Mk2 bolt? I wonder if its the same as the Lakefield MK1. It certainly looks like you could easily convert the MK1 to an Mk2 with a few replacement parts and some stock modifications.

I don't think there are many Mk. Is made - only a handful of youth/target/smoothbore varmint guns. I expect they're just the Mk. 2 minus the magazine well/cutouts.

The front edge of the bolt handle to the front edge of the bolt for my Lakefield measures to about 3 5/8" (crudely eyeballed with a tape measure)

Another difference I noticed is that in the new Savage rifles, the cutout in the receiver for the bolt handle is angled, so when the bolt is turned, it cams the bolt into battery. On the older Lakefield, that cut is straight, so when you close the bolt, the bolt face should already be flush with the breech.
