is there any appreciable diference between the various savage mk2 models as far as accuracy is concerned?I like the heavier thumbhole laminate stock, but the regular plastic stock is lighter,but I don't want to sacrifice accuracy.

I have had three of the heavy barreled Mark IIs. I found the accuracy was about the same IF you did your part. However, weight and balance was vastly different.
The plastic stocked ones are definitely front heavy. The laminated conventional stocked ones are better in the balance department, and work quite well.
However, the laminated thumbhole version is much better for me. It is heavier, but for shooting from a bench, or with a rest, it is a very accurate rifle. It seems you can hold it much steadier, so you get better accuracy.
These are a bit heavy if you are walking in the fields, but most of our shooting with the .22 is at Gophers, so you are driving and setting up a shooting table, where you can stay for 20 minutes or so and shoot. In this case, weight does not matter, and helps keep things a bit more stable in some of your Prairie winds.
