Savage MKII and scope mounting conundrum......

Bought a MKII heavy barrel for the boy to plink with, don't ask what model, I couldn't tell you. I installed a new out of the box Bushnell scope on it. First had some windage L/R issues with the set up, then realized my windage adjustable mounts were all fked up, centered the rings and so far so good.

Now, I've run out of verticle adjustment. Shoots 5" high at 50yds. Scope is as far "down" as the adjustment allows, so I shimmed between the scope and the rear ring with a piece of aluminum folded over, 4x. Ironically, it's a Corona beer can, but I digress.

I haven't been able to shoot it with the "fix" yet.

I've mounted various scopes, a 30-06, a 303, a 270 over the years and have never had such an awful time doing so. What is another way of accomplishing what I need, without it being all redneck?

Burris Signature zee rings in the appropriate height will fit the Weaver style bases on the Savage.

A set of these off set inserts will allow you to mount a scope with the internal adjustments centred and will correct both windage & elevation mis-alignment. They allow stress free mounting and will not mark a tube either.

I went this route on my Savage MkII and couldn’t be happier with the mounting
 
Switch the rings front to back and see it it changes to the opposite... Also, I would just get some standard rings, I usually just get the basic $30 Weaver or Vortex tactical 4-hole rings. I've never owned a rifle that was build so badly that it required adjustment in the rings.

-Was the rifle brand new?
-If its used, are there some sort of 'MOA rail' on it that's installed backwards by the previous owner? I've seen a few pretty funny things come messed up from previous owners that pretty much had NO clue.

If it shoots 5" high at 50 yards and you shimmed the rear ring up, it will shoot even higher. I went through the opposite issue trying to sight in my 10/22, had to use a bunch of my up adjustment to get it to sighted in. It's got a removable rail, so I did some playing with shimming the scope rail, then when I had it where I wanted it I bedded the rail to the receiver with JB weld putty. I made mine permanent, but it would be easy enough to use a mold release on the action and have the rail removable still. I did this because I wanted as much up adjustment as I could for longer range shooting. I was hoping to try my luck at rimfire PRS with it. I have shimmed 2 piece scope bases a tiny amount before with succes, but not usually more than about .010 - .015".

Nope, not new. One of those "too good to be true" deals you sometimes stumble upon. Thinking now I know why it was a deal, lol.

1st off you don't put shims between the ring and the scope tube, I wouldn't be surprized if you dented the scope tube by doing so. The correct way is to put the shims between the scope base and the action.
 
EGW makes a rail for the Savage MkII, purchased one from Brownells. You can get these with 0 moa or 20 moa. Measure your ejection port before ordering or it may look funny like mine. It does not affect ejection of spent cases.
 
I'll stick with my original suggestion. If you're prepared to spend the money, do it right and everyone will be happy until the gun goes down the road.

I can second the EGW rail, ordered mine from Mystic Precision. Theres a 1-3/8" and 1-5/8". Maybe the issue is the scope, could be defective. Try it on a different rifle and see if the problem follows the scope. Just a thought.

If you need shims something is really wrong. shimming bases or rings puts stress on the main tube of the optic hence all the scopes on the EE with Ring marks. Guys wont blink to spend good money on a gun or scope but buy SHxT rings or bases to mount them. Not really following the thought process here. Quality bases and rings are more for a reason, they are higher grade materials made to higher quality standards. I have several scopes that have been on multiple guns with no marks from rings. An extra hundred on a set of rings to not fuXX up a scope doesn't seem like a high price. They will last a lifetime and if you decide to sell hold their value. I only know by learning all the hard lessons and dinging many scope tubes. Tasco weaver etc should be avoided. If ur scopes cost $500 ur mounts shouldn't really bother you at $100-$250. If ur scope costs less don't worry about it cuz the rings and bases will be the last of ur worries!!
