Hi CGN. I had a few light strikes on my MKII yesterday. It was new in 2013 and it has at least 3000 rounds through it (conservative estimate).

I’m not sure if I need to replace the firing pin but I’ve never had light strikes before. Is there anything wear and tear related that I should look for?

On that topic, i let my boys use snap caps to train with this rifle. Are snap caps necessary to prevent damage to the firing pin?

Either way I want to get a firing pin, and extractor kit to have on hand, but I’m having trouble sourcing these parts.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for reading.

I have called Savage directly in the US for a MK2 under warranty and a parts rifle that was not. Both simple transactions to get the parts I needed, once for free, once with a CC.

You can call Lakefield/Savage (Ontario) directly without going through their US parent company.

Yes snap caps are required for rimfire dry fire 100%. If you dry fire without snap caps you can damage your firing pin or edge of your chamber. Ive read that you can get plastic drywall plugs that fit for a cheap solution.

Id start with cleaning your bolt and making sure its oiled. Check for any damage when putting it back together. Its not a hard job, just youtube it. Tip: put the clip on before SLIDING the extractor and ejector in.. took me way too long trying to put the clip on over the pieces.

Thank you gentlemen. I have some time to get into it today, and JPenner, I’ll admit that I probably DID use too much oil.

Brad243, thanks for the tip on the extractor/ejector. That is so on point that it should be in the instructions. Hahaha.

Emerson and Winz, thanks for the direction there. I’ll be taking all this CGN advice.

Again, many thanks.
