Savage mod 11 Scout in 308. Mag issues

Looking for advice,
Bought rifle used in “as new” condition. 1st time out today magazine jammed frequently. Seemed to be caused by the 2nd and 3rd rds jamming under the one above, i.e. not pushing it up into feed path, bolt passes right over.

Once it was due to bad insertion/ seating.
I don’t think it’s my loading. Being aware of the issue i was being very intentional with each rd… seated well, follower level & not caught up etc
Also, it is a 10 rd mag, and I only ever loaded 4 or 5, the spring should be strong enough

It was approx -10, maybe if the mag was full of oily gunk and it started to freeze up and impede the spring?
The safety got pretty stiff towards the end now that I think of it.

These mags are over 100$, any chance Savage warrants them?
Are they meant to be disassembled? Looks like « Not without breaking it »
it can’t be the mag has stricter tolerances than the chamber lol. I was shooting brass-cased surplus, full disclosure:)

any recommendations for aftermarket options?

If your Savage 11 has the mag release forward of the mag on the rifle you are having the same issue I have using the 10 round savage mags with a 10 TR.

I have tried all the fixes on you tube and no joy.

Most “Fixes” involve bending the rear tab on the mag backwards, which is supposed to make the rear of the mag sit higher so the bolt catches the round. This has not worked for me.

Other fixes are to bend the mag lips so the rounds sit higher - also has not worked for me.

There are a lot of posts on other forums as well as u-tube with people having the same issue.

I believe a company named Dark Eagle makes a 10 round mag that works that also go for around $100 or so.

My fix will be going to a different bottom metal.
 
I had same problems you describe when I got my 11 scout 2016. I emailed savage support they ask for rifle S/N . I sent a pic of mag , they replaced free. obviously savage knows the mags are problematic as they sent me package of 2 . one has the same problems , one is fine . This is my deer hunting rifle so i ended up getting a Savage 10FC flush fit 4 round mag for hunting , more reliable no problems at all. I see retailers selling these mags for $119 , not worth it.

Not giving me a lot of confidence!!! I just took delivery of a previously owned Savage rifle - an Axis II in Scout configuration - chambered in 7.62x39 - still waiting for some reloading parts, so I have not tried to fire it yet. I also have a near-to-new Savage 93R17 - with 4 x Savage brand magazines - is giving me "fits" to figure out - jams pointy cartridges to hit rear of barrel higher than chamber, or fails to pick them up, at all, when cycling the bolt. I do know from 1980's that Savage could make very accurate rifles - that one was a Model 112V in 22-250 - I watched an acquaintance use my hand loads to fire a five shot "lumpy single hole" group at 100 yards with it, but examples here suggest that "feeding" from their magazines is not one of their strong suits any more!!

Last week,I filled out a message form on Savage website to see if the magazines are still available - the reply I got said I needed to phone a 1-800 call centre and have serial number handy - to order parts.
 
I only have 1 of those OEM 10 rounders, use it in a 10HS in 308, works fine for me, used it in a 12FV in 6.5 and it worked fine.
They can be disassembled easily, just a squeeze on the lower part of the metal body.
Dropped the 6.5 into an MDT XRS, won't feed for #### with any AICS mags, like the action/stroke is too long, the rounds jump out of the mag before the bullet is any where near the bore and get stuck in there sideways.
It's a single shot now basically.
 
Thought I would post and update to his thread as I came across a 10 round mag that seems to actually work.

In one last ditch effort to trying to find a solution without purchasing a chassis (I absolutely love the custom McMillan style A5 custom wood stock I had made or my 10 TR) I purchased a used Dark Eagle Custom 10 round mag of a CGN’er.

It arrived yesterday, and although time may tell if it continues to do so, and YMMV, it inserts and feeds flawlessly like a mag is supposed to.

It appears to use the factory upper of a savage magazine mated to a custom metal extension / base with a custom follower and what appears to be a 308 Pmag magazine spring which has a lot more tension that the two factory Savage 10 round mags I have.

If anyone has any of these Dark Eagle 10 round mags in 308 for sale please hit me up as I would like to purchase at least one more.

###### Armory appears to be the canadian distributor but they appear to be out of mags.

I also noticed today on my custom stock (no sure if this is the same as the factory Accustock as I sold that a few years back) that there was a bit of extra space / wood that could be relieved so the factory DBM could sit closer / further in giving the mag a bit more height to allow the bottom of the bolt to have more contact with the shell casings. Relieving a small amount of wood has improved feeding greatly even with the factory savage 10 round mags. Did this to both the front and back where the DBM sits against the stock to ensure I did not change the angle of the rounds. Not sure if this can be done with the Accustock (if I recall correctly the Accustock has aluminum there) but on the wood stock this took about 5 minutes with a dremel.

Sorry folks, but a ten round mag for hunting?
Surely that many rounds in a center fire rifle detach magazine is going to put some undo effort on the magazine carrying ability.
Maybe a couple five shot rounders?
Maybe three, three shot mags?
WTF am I missing here?
