Savage Model 10 or Rem 700

New hear so bare with me.

My grandfather recently gave me a 1962 BSA Majestic featherweight chambered 30-06. I got out last weekend to shoot it and was impressed. I would like to try hunting with it this season.

I would like to get into long range shooting, and have been looking at target guns. I was considering a Savage Model 10 as it fits nicely in my price range (1100) and from online reviews, sounds like it delivers for its price. Looking through this forum, however, it looks like a solid number of you sport rem700's. And by the look of it, they are easy to customize. Havnt had a chance to research the rem700 that much. how does it compare in accuracy? durability ect

What would you folks suggest? The would be a purely target rifle.

chambered .308 preferred
left Handed.
100-1000 yards is where i would like to be shooting.

check my posts, this topic has been pretty well covered, I to like you are a left handed shooter, so the savage 10 flcp-k is a good choice approx 950.00 but the glass is going to set you back about 1500.00 to 2,000.00 I am in the same situation as you but I have to build up my budget as I want to do this right. I now realize how important the glass is, and it will be more expensive then the rifle itself.

Like the first person to reply mentioned, this is a long covered debate for years. But I would suggest it is more like Ford vs. Chevy…so personal preference really is the determining factor plus a few variables.

Rem700 – tried and true. Can’t go wrong with this. Big plus for it is available aftermarket stocks for it. Because they have kept pretty much the same design of the receiver, aftermarket stocks all make one for the Rem700. Some say the action is somewhat smoother than the savage.


Savage 10 – Also a very reliable action. The minus is over the years they have changed the bolt spacing to mount the stock (and a few other things) have kept it away from having too many options for aftermarket stocks. This is however changing..there are few chassis systems for it now and also big news on Accuracy International now making one for it.
Some of the big pluses (in my mind) are the inherent features of it as it comes stock. Such as: Floating bolt head, drop magazine, bolt handle removal, barrel nut for barrel changes, adjustable trigger..to name a few.

As for my experience – I have had quite a few Rem700s in 22-250, .223 VSSF, .308 P, and another .308 5R. All shot great. Only complaint I could give them sometimes is the stock triggers. Nothing that couldn’t be either dealt with or changed.

I have traded my last Rem 700 5R for my new Savage 10 FCP-K in .308. for the money it just had so much more like I mentioned. Fluted barrel, muzzle break, accu-trigger (which I love but some people don’t). drop magazine, (which all my rem700 did NOT have) plus the features I mentioned above. Those features have made it very affordable for me to convert it to a 300 WSM now. It also sits in a really nice and robust aluminum chassis.

As for accuracy I would have to say they are both very comparable. For some reason I seem to shoot better/more consistant with my Savage. Maybe it’s the trigger? Maybe I just like it better?? But I can tell you everything I have loaded for it 110g, 155.5 bergers, 175 SMK, and even loaded 208 amax in it..they all shoot .75 moa or less. And quite honestly, more groups are closer to .5”. It just seems to work well.

So…maybe handle them in person, see if one “works” for you better. Because like I said, between these two options…pretty hard to declare an actual “winner”.
