Just wanted to know if its possible to convert a Savage Model 10FCP McMillan to chamber a 30 06 round. Or how how to buy to the individual components and assemble yourself? I haven't talked to Savage arms about this but wanted to hear from everyone eles.
Thanks.

A .30-06 won't fit. Receiver is too short. So is the mag.
You could buy a Model 111FCXP3(under their package series). It's already chambered in .30-06 and has a synthetic stock. Or a .25-06 Model 110FCP-K and rebarrel. Finding a barrel might be an issue though.

You need a long action to run the 30-06. So the model number needs to be a 3 digit one( 110).. not a 2 digit (10) which signifies the short action..

Are you really hung up on the Mcmillan stock?? I believe you can have them ordered for you by ATR or one of the other sponsors on this forum.

w w w.savagearms.com/110fcp.htm is available in 25-06 or 300 win mag.. it has the same features as the 10 FCP only in a long action and of course with out the mcmillan..

Barrels are really easy to come by. Talk to Jerry at www.mysticprecision.com for help there.. or any one of many fine gunshops can order prefit barrels that are quite easy to install with basic know how.. Jerry has many good articles on his site for the beginner Savage junky..LOL

Blygy, thanks. Not sure who else is specialising in barrels and stuff for the Savage/Stevens?

The 06 will not fit but a 30-284 win WILL. Little used wildcat but it does exist. You can also look at a 30X 57 Mauser. Another little used wildcat.

You would just need a properly chambered/threaded barrel and headspace. Let me know if I can help you source such a barrel.

Why do you want a 30-06? The 308 can be loaded to mimic a 30-06 and the long mags of the Savage allow ALOT of different options for bullets and throating.

If you do want more horsepower, why not the 300WSM?

Jerry

Thanks everyone. I thought about getting the 110 and just fittin a larger barell to it. I am not hung up on the mcmillan stock. just thought it would be nice. I am hung up on the 30 06 for the heavier lead that it can sling(or maybe there are more options for the 300win mag). Cost to shoot is another thing I am hung up on aswell. The 30 06 seems quite common and lots of options. Or atleast I think.
Thanks, everyone.

I have a 10FCP HS Precision and I love it.

Like Mysticplayer said, with the GENEROUS mag length in a Model 10, you can load up some pretty heavy slugs in a .308 casing and get away with it - certainly as heavy as anything a .30-06 can toss, I'd bet. If you're really wanting to push things to the limits, you can even look into duplex powder loads like some of the old-time wildcatters used to use...

EDIT - and also +1 to the .300 WSM; I had a Tikka T3 Lite in that chambering that was MUSTARD. Took many a deer at many a different range over the last 4 years with it, and it's certainly got plenty of "oomph" if that's your need... AND it's good to go in a shorter action like a Mod10.

After talking to Rick at ATR and learning what he is doing with his 308 and the real heavies (I can't remember if he is shooting 190s or 210s) with Vituvari powder I would not feel under gunned with one..
