Looking to alter the internal mag of my 223 varmint gun. The mag backstop is too thick (front to back) only allowing for factory rounds to be loaded. I seat my bullets out rather far and can only get one in the mag as a result. I'm thinking I'd like to pull the mag and re-machine a shorter backstop to allow for longer bullets. Has anyone done this before?

My concern is how it might effect the feed ramp as a result. Any insight would be appreciated.

I've done similar, but in the end swapping in new bottom metal to use mdt mags was easier. - dan

PlanA... single shot follower tray and forget about the mag entirely.

PlanB... know anyone good at tig welding... and machine up a spacer for the rear of the follower.

PlanC.. chop a det mag box that has the internal length you want and just use the action and stock to hold it in place. Dap of hot glue here and there when you get perfect feeding.

PlanD... drop barreled action into a stock or chassis adapted to use det mags. If paying for shop time to do planB, this is likely cheaper and better in the long run

YMMV

Thanks for the suggestions guys!

Dan, I'll look into those mdt mags to see what that's all about.

Jerry, plan B sounds like what I was thinking....I have my own machine shop so I can do the work. Guess I'll just have to go for it if i go that route!
