Recently purchased in .308.. of course I'm looking to do some long range shooting..

Was wondering what grain and powder load to use.. I have heard weights from 155 berger to 205grns

I would greatly appreciate any feedback

Thanks in advance

Any quality match bullet will let you get out there. Heavier generally means higher BC, giving less drop and less wind drift. What kind of ranges are you going to shoot at? What works at 600m might not work at 1200m.
You have a 1-in-12 twist, so you should be able to go up to 200grains under good conditions and sufficient velocity.

Finding components is the fun part nowadays!
Run what you can find, 168-200gr preferably.
Consult your loading manuals.

Happy shooting.

I will be direct in my response and I am trying to be helpful but sugar coating accuracy stuff just does not answer your questions properly,

assumptions, 1. new to longer range shooting, 2. buy a savage instead of a $5000 gun (no problem just reality for an answer) 3. 2015 join date so you are new to this, 4. not sure how much shooting or reloading you have done 5. no idea the longest distance you WILL SHOOT AT A LOT

so

stick with 155.5 BERGERS or lapua 155 for now and shoot a lot, less recoil and yet quite accurate out to 600 (perhaps 1000 in calmish winds and or good conditions)

I take it you are not competing in national f-class events right away so learn the wind and gun

this will place you in a better position to handle the 185 juggs bergers or lapua heavies later on next year,

try not to be too big man at the start

great targets and good gun handling are learned not aqcuired by buying the biggest and badest out there,

my thoughts and welcome

Hey Jefferson

Thanks for the input.. Yes I am very new at this. I realoaded abut 20 years ago and know a hell of a lot now than I did then. Took the ORA long range shoot winter course last year and Im slowly getting set up. I'm not going to be the big man this year that for sure. The farthest Ive ever shot is 300yards at my range in Oshawa. I have a Browning A bolt in 300 winmag and I had about a 12" group with it at 500 yards at the ORA final day of class. Was happy to hit something that far with very basic equipment. Instead of MOA the instructor was calling me Minute of Meat shooter.. LOL... had a great time and hope to learn alot from this site as I was told I would..

One step at a time no rush.. Very impressed how these guys and gals can shoot so far..

Cheers

The ORA course and a 12 F-TR is a pretty good start in this game. The 12 twist might limit you practically to 185 or less, but try whatever you can get your hands on. I'd bet that 155.5s will shoot great, but so will most match grade bullets. There have been a few guys come out of the ORA course shooting 155gr bullets that have shot very well at Regional and National events (with some practice of course!). You may want to give Peter Dobson at Hirsch Precision a call; Lapua has some newer offerings that seem to have good availability.

Good luck, and hope to see you out on the range this summer!
