Posted for my bro.....
Got one of these coming, he will be using factory ammo for the time being and is looking for any experiences others have had with long range (500M-1000M) shooting and factory hunting loads with similar ballistics under 500M.

Savage platforms do very well at longer ranges... Most success is achieved when the shooter hand loads and tunes the load for the specific rifle. It will all depend on his capabilities. The model 10/12 actions are one of the more popular actions aside from the remington 700. I imagine with time, form, proper optics, and practice, your bro will do just fine. It's definitely not an overnight thing.

The Bro here. Just looking for someone whose shot the .308 out of the 26" Savage barrel systematically out to 1000. Would give me a better starting point. As well, in the past have experienced 168 gr .308 bullet tumbling at 700-800. Is the tumbling specific to that cartridge, or that weight of bullet? I've been told, and am confident that the 175-178 gr bullets solve the tumbling problem, but am curious if lighter bullets tumble as well. Ideally, I'll shoot the Hornady 165 gr SST and see how that works. I've got a buddy that has all the equipment for loading if the factory loads don't work, but I'd like to avoid the time outlay. Too many hobbies and too little time...

I've heard of the 168 gr. Matchkings having stability issues. I would bump up the 175gr matchkings if you can. Those do very well.

Or shoot 155's. They work well to 1000 too. However I am not sure what is offered for match grade factory ammo with that bullet weight.

Ummmm, why do you want to know about factory "hunting" loads for 500 to 1000 in 308? I don't know much about long distance hunting but for anything bigger that groundhogs, 308 is light for clean kills I think. For accuracy you would be better with match bullets. That is what they are for.

If you reread the original post, the hunting was under 500M.

Federal Gold Metal Match 175gr will work to past a 1000yards in a Savage 1-10 twist 20" barrel so your longer barrel will do fine. The FGMM 168 are known to have issues at long ranges of 800+.

Since you are interrested in that model 12, i got one that i bought 6 or 7 years ago, i dont shoot it much anymore, but i reload for that rig Hornady 168 gr Match BT Varget and BR-2 and the max i tryed it was 500 metres, i could keep easy all my bullet in the 6 inch bull, very good accutriger, you will like shooting one... Cheers. JP.

Just check out they dont make that model 12 FV in 308 no more, make it more valuable as it was an inexpensive way to have great shooting with a 30 caliber... JP

168 SMK's were designed in the 1960's for shooting 300m ISU. They were never designed for long range shooting. Try anything in the 155 gr range, they all shoot well out to 1000 yards.
For the price of 10 boxes (200 rounds) of match ammo you can set yourself up with a good reloading kit. Match bullets are the only way to go if you plan to shoot any distance over 300 yards.
