I am looking at getting a savage model as BTCSS in either 223 or 204 ruger. I have this gun in 17 HMR and really like it and now want to move up to touch critters at a longer range. I have looked at the 223 but noticed the 204 ruger. THe spec difference as I see it is the twist in the barrel. Does anyone out there have any first hand experience with these two and what is the actual practical differences.

I shoot a M12 LRPV in 204 ruger and I really enjoy it. 39gr Sierra Blitz King traveling at 3800FPS. Who doesn't like that.:p

With the 223 you get a lot more choices for factory ammo. My 204 shoots very well with 32gr Hornady factory ammo.

With both you should be able to watch your hits.

Both are great choices but the 204 may be better if your reloading.

I would go .223 because of the larger bullet selection and cheaper brass. For shooting critters the farthest you will shoot will probably be 300 yards ish, a 204 or a 223 will do that well, but if you want to do a little longer range target shooting a .223 will offer better bullet selection for that.

thanks for reply, yes mostly target shooting and want to reach out to 2-300 yds. Have the 17hmr for 100. have the savage thumbhole and am looking at the savage 223 with the thumbhole. Trying now to figure out what scope to put on it for the 2-300 yd range

.223 if you want to shoot longer distances. Sightron scopes are definitely nice.

The first gun I bought with my "Quit smoking money" was a 12FV in .223- most accurate rifle I have ever owned. With 37gr Calhoon on 26gr Varget it is hell on gophers out to 400yds. No point shooting them any further out.
